Top Ten from 2013

2013 was a full reading year for me. I read and listened to over 250 books this past year!

It's going to be hard to narrow down my favorites, as the majority of what I consumed was pretty good, but .. here goes {and this is in NO particular order}

A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

Debut novelist Deborah Harkness has crafted a mesmerizing and addictive read, equal parts history and magic, romance and suspense. Diana is a bold heroine who meets her equal in vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont, and gradually warms up to him as their alliance deepens into an intimacy that violates age-old taboos. This smart, sophisticated story harks back to the novels of Anne Rice, but it is as contemporary and sensual as the Twilight series-with an extra serving of historical realism.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media--as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents--the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter--but is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn't do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around

Justice For Skylar {Assasin/Shifter series by Sandrine Gasq-Dion} release day review & giveaway**

We are gathered here today to celebrate the special Christmas day release of
Justice for Skylar
This is the first book in the "12 Olympians" series by Sandrine Gasq-Dion
This is a companion series to her best selling Assassin/Shifter series

** Warning, this is an adult paranormal/shifter M/M series, mature content not intended for anyone under the age of 18 **

Skylar Foxx has been on his own for years, ever since he had been kicked out of his home just shy of turning sixteen. He worked the streets for food and warmth, certain that one day his life would take a better path. That day arrived in the form of a flyer smacking him in the face after enduring a particularly rough trick. Walking through the front door of the Pride safe house became the best decision Skylar ever made. He began a new life with help from billionaire businessman Caden Fournier, his husband, Kellan, and their outreach center associates. That life also included a handsome, six-foot-two Italian who looked mighty fine astride a Harley. After a tense introduction, Skylar discovered Justice Salvatore was unlike any man he'd ever met. He’s about to find out just how different Justice is. The two grow closer as Skylar struggles with his own weird… ability. Just when he dares to dream of a happy ending, his past explodes into his present and threatens to destroy everything.

Justice Salvatore has only been in love once, with the beautiful daughter of his werewolf pack’s beta. She was human, however, and Justice stayed away to protect her — only to mourn her death from a rogue attack. Skylar Foxx is stunning, but Justice is swept away by his incredible voice. Smitten on the spot, he sets his sights on getting to know the skittish young man. Bad things are happening to Skylar as they grow close, and Justice will do everything in his power to protect him. A terrifying secret shakes Justice to his core, and he is forced to decide whether someone close to him will live or die. After the hell Skylar has been through, Justice makes the only choice. There will be justice for Skylar.

Merry Christmas! Here is an excerpt from Justice for Skylar:

“Like it?”

Skylar spun around to see Justice Salvatore smiling at him. Oh, holy fucking hell. Tight, faded black jeans hugged enormous thighs and painted a perfect picture of what Justice was hiding under them — although he’d gotten a very good look at what Justice was hiding under them. The striptease all the guys had done to raise money for the outreach centers had given him all kinds of memories of the sinfully, sexy man currently standing in front of him. All glorious six foot two inches of him. A leather jacket hung from his fingertips over one shoulder and a white tank accentuated large biceps.

Skylar licked his lips as he gave Justice a slow once over. “It’s beautiful.” Skylar finally looked up and met with greenish-blue eyes.

“Want to take a ride?” Skylar stepped back in shock.

“Really?”

“Yeah, unless you need to have caffeine, like, right now. I can bring you back and then maybe we can both have coffee.”

Skylar motioned to the cup in Justice’s hand. “Seems like you already got some.”

Justice threw the cup towards the large trashcan in front. It dropped in perfectly. “Not anymore. Guess I’ll get some when we get back.”

Skylar looked from the bike and back to Justice. “Um, do you have an extra helmet?”

Justice regarded Skylar’s face closely. “Are you afraid of motorcycles?” Skylar blinked up at him. “It’s okay if you are. I’ll be real careful, I promise.” Justice held his fingers up. “Scout’s honor.”

Skylar chuckled. “Wrong fingers. That’s ‘hang loose’ in Hawaii.”

Justice narrowed his eyes with a grin. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure.” Skylar ran his hand along the bike seat. “I’ll go with you.” What the hell, he had to get over his fear at some point. This was his new life, and he was going to start it by facing down all of his fears. Justice removed the extra helmet from his saddlebag and handed it to Skylar. It wasn’t too cold out, but Skylar’s sweater wouldn’t be sufficient on the back of the bike.

Justice swung his jacket around and placed it on Skylar’s shoulders. “Wear this.” Skylar threaded his arms in the jacket and smiled when it came down to the tips of his fingers. He looked up at Justice.

“What about you? Won’t you be cold?” “

I’ll be fine.” Justice winked and straddled his bike. “Now, get on.” Justice closed his eyes as Skylar got on the back of the bike. Warmth from Skylar pressed to his back and he almost sighed. “Put your helmet on,” he said.

“Yes, sir,” came from behind him. Justice chuckled, started the bike and looked over his shoulder.

"Now, hang on.”

Justice for Skylar is the first book in a new companion series to the Assassin/Shifter series we have come to know and love by this best selling author. Over the last several books in the A/S series, we've gotten to know the young group of misfits that have taken solace within the Pride safe house that is ran by several of our shifters and humans, particularly Caden and Kellan. Caden considers all of them to be like his children, he dotes on them and protects them. So when Petey and the rogues come after his boys, it gets real ugly real quick!

Skylar Fox had been on his own since he was 16. Working tricks on the streets just to put food in his mouth. All of that changed the day he walked into the Pride safe house. Now he's finishing school, living in a house with his friends under the protection of Caden and the rest of the guys, and being courted by the sexiest Italian shifter on the planet. At first Skylar cannot believe that Justice Salvatore would want him, truly want to be with him and love him. He has come to think of himself as worthless and unlovable because of the bad things he had to do to survive when he lived on the streets. But Justice is bound and determined to prove to Skylar that he can and does love him, unconditionally.

Justice only ever loved one other person, a human girl, the daughter of his father's beta. A rogue attack left her dead and Justice broken, he hadn't been able to protect her. He will be damned if he won't protect Skylar! As the story unfolds we learn even more about Skylar and his friends like Elijah and Stone. But we also learn more about the shifters, especially the Salvatore's and why the rogues want them all so badly. Skylar and his friends all have certain abilities that Justice and the other's have begun noticing as of late. And as Justice and Skylar are learning about each other, building a strong foundation for a lasting relationship, they are also learning more about Skylar's ability. Everything comes to a heated conclusion when someone from Justice's past threatens not only his future with Skylar, but Skylar's life. Someone is going to die, the question is who?

At 22 books into the Assassin/Shifter series, Gasq-Dion has come up with a nice twist to breathe new life into these stories. Over the years we've fallen in love with all of these characters, families, shifters and assassins. We've had mates that had to grow up to be together, psychotic FBI agents falling in love with the head of the Russian Mob, adorable wolves that were born mated and so many more plot lines it would take me all day to write about them. Now we have the introduction of 'The 12 Olympians' starting with Skylar. The gods have sent these young adults to assist James and Wayne and their groups in the battle that is to come. Even the powers of the shifters as well as their animals have evolved as of late. I love that the author is constantly evolving as well with new stories, couples and struggles throughout this series.

The A/S series is my favorite M/M series. The writing is always detailed, complex and intriguing; as well as the stories and the characters. There is a lot going on within the series as a whole and then within each book as well. If you're a fan of action, suspense, drama, shifters, hot sweaty sexy naked men whose mission in life is to love their partner completely (and don't mind displaying said love for us to enjoy and usually on the X rated level!) then this is a must read series for you!

Up next is 'At Years End' I believe, and it cannot release soon enough.

I have been blessed in this life to not only have parents that support me, but kids that do as well. I grew up in a loving but "Old School" French household. My parents worked for the airlines (TWA) so I was able to see a lot of Europe as a kid. I moved to Seattle Washington at the age of 22 and stayed there for twelve years before moving to Alaska for a little over two. Fairbanks, AK was one hell of an experience and I wouldn't hesitate to go back! I spent a little over a year in South Carolina before moving back to Arizona. I then left for Kansas for five years and now reside in the South for another two years. I've been married to the military in one way or another for over half my life and wouldn't change a thing about it. Writing has become my fulltime job and I've never been so happy doing a job I love and being able to do it in my jammies. I plan on writing until I dry up and die. Hopefully, that won't happen soon!

Christmas at the Dion house

It used to be where I’d get up at four in the morning Christmas day and get everything ready. I’d make pies from scratch, get my 15 pound turkey all lathered up and start boiling potatoes. Then I married the military, I began buying pies (I love Sara Lee) and my turkey has gotten to be 25 pounds. Over the years, we had so many soldiers spending the holidays with us; I just couldn’t put in the work anymore. We’d search high and low for the perfect Christmas tree, buy our yearly ornament from Hallmark and open one gift on Christmas Eve.
Now my kids are grown and we have four cats. So we now have the Christmas counter with a tiny tree. I still buy pies, I have a 15 pound turkey and I think there’s one gift that hasn’t been opened. Christmas became so much more than gift giving over the years, it was a time spent with people who had nowhere else to go and so we became their family.
Present time: The tiny tree is barely surviving; I found it on the floor yesterday and my cat was covered in glitter.
Ah well.

Pendomus Chronicles book one {blog tour spotlight, review & giveaway}

PendomusEverblossom2-small

Humanity has colonized on the tidally locked planet Pendomus.
Residing between extreme heat and frigid cold is the complex known as the Helix. Within lies a highly sophisticated society functioning solely on humans fulfilling their life’s purpose as determined by their natural aptitudes and daily brain scans.
Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem has found her calling studying the ancient trees nearby and anxiously awaits a professional placement which will allow her to continue her work.

Runa’s life takes an unforeseen turn when she’s brutally attacked and left for dead in those woods. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she’s immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived without the Helix. Fueled by a yearning to understand and an attraction she didn’t even know was possible, Runa tries to make a new life for herself. Yet, there’s much she doesn’t know about herself, about the planet, and the forces controlling her from afar.

What she needs are some answers.

This story is told from two different POV. Runa, our heroine, is an anomaly. She is different and slightly unique. The world she lives in, Helix, revolves around a certain way of life and Runa is constantly questioning things. She loves to study their surrounding nature and hopes to continue doing so once she receives her placement. When she’s placed elsewhere she is disappointed and rebels even further, which leads to her being attacked and abandoned.

Then we have the stranger with the blue hair, Traeton. He is dependable and protective of Runa almost immediately. But he fears getting to close to anyone and getting hurt. The majority of the time we are seeing the story unfold through Runa’s eyes, and I struggled with her POV. Her mind’s eye would make some crazy jumps in the story that didn’t mesh. And although Traeton’s POV confused me at first, I enjoyed his POV more so.

The world building within Pendomus and Helix was very detailed and vivid. I could actually picture this odd world in my mind. The characters seemed too juvenile for the storyline though. There were some breaks in Runa’s timeline as well that threw me, it didn’t flow from one thing happening to the next. I almost enjoyed the secondary characters Fenton and Kani with a bad attitude, dry whitty sense of humor and banter more so than the main characters.

If you can get past the rocky start and the uneven flow of Runa’s story, you will get to enjoy the scenery and a fresh take on fantasy and sci-fi aspects of this book. I give this one 3/5 as I can see a lot of promise for this series if the author can just find her footing. Traeton is adorable and I have to see where Fenton and Kani end up.

Two Degrees Closer To Hell release day blitz

Two Degrees Closer To Hell
Genre: Horror
Cover Artist: Airicka's Mystical Creations
Publisher: Staccato Publishing
Release Date: December 17, 2013

Speculative fiction writer, David Fingerman, is back with a series of short stories guaranteed to curl your toes and raise your hair. If you're looking for some quick thrills, let these stories take you on a ride that will bring you two degrees closer to Hell.

Excerpt:
Travis Crowder did not see himself as evil. Unfortunately for him, the judge, prosecutor, witnesses, and most importantly, the jury, did.
People in the gallery sitting behind the prosecutor applauded and cheered at the reading of the verdict. The ones behind the defense table were escorted from the courtroom.
“Order!” Judge Alvin Baker pounded his gavel. Silence ensued. “Travis Crowder, you have been found guilty of murder in the first degree by a jury of your peers. Do you have anything to say before sentencing?”
Travis stared down at the table without getting up. “It was an accident.”
His attorney did stand. “Your Honor, I request that you hold off on sentencing until I can file an appeal.”
The remaining crowd booed.
Judge Baker glared at the audience.  “None of that, now.” He motioned to the deputy who then cuffed Travis’ hands behind his back and guided him to the front of the bench.
“Look at me, son.” Baker spoke in a soft, calming voice.
Looking up from the plastic sheet on which he stood, Travis tried to focus on the judge, and then he heard the click.
--
Travis stood next to his attorney behind the defense table and watched as one deputy holstered his gun, two others wrapped the plastic around the body while another wiped blood splatter off the front of the bench and removed pieces of skull lodged into the wood.
“What the hell!” Travis grabbed at his attorney’s arm. His hand went right through. Confused and nearing panic, Travis screamed. No one reacted.
“Damn, I love watching the life go out in their eyes. I tell ya, that’s what being a judge is all about.” Baker pounded the gavel. “We’re in recess, people."

AUTHOR BIO
During the summer months when the sun is shining and birds are singing, David is perfectly content to sit in his office, with blinds drawn, typing away at the computer. His favorite day of the year is the first day toward the end of summer that’s cool enough to pull a flannel shirt from the closet.

As a student at the University of Minnesota, David realized that if he switched his major from journalism to speech, he could graduate that quarter. It was a no-brainer. After 24 years of working in the court system, he walked away to write full time – another no-brainer.

Two Degrees Closer to Hell will be his second collection of short stories. He has also written three other novels.

David is married and lives in Minneapolis.
