The Other Me cover

The Other Me
Author: Suzanne van Rooyen
Genre: YA, LGBT, Contemporary | Pages 216 | Release Date: 12/19/13
Publisher: Harmony Ink Press
Fifteen-year-old Treasa Prescott thinks she’s an alien. She doesn’t fit in with the preppy South African private school crowd and feels claustrophobic in her own skin. Treasa is worried she might spend life as a social pariah when she meets Gabriel du Preez. Gabriel plays the piano better than Beethoven, has a black belt in karate, and would look good wearing a garbage bag. Treasa thinks he’s perfect. It might even be love, as long as Gabriel doesn’t find out she’s a freak.

As Treasa spends time with Gabriel, she realizes she might not love him as much as she wants to be him, and that the reason she feels uncomfortable in her skin might have less to do with extra-terrestrial origins and more to do with being born in the wrong body.

But Gabriel is not the perfect boy Treasa imagines. He harbors dark secrets and self-destructive tendencies. Still, Treasa might be able to accept Gabriel’s baggage if he can accept who she longs to be.

PRAISE FOR THE OTHER ME

“The Other Me is a story that will stay with me for a long time. This is what YA should be and Van Rooyen has that uncanny ability to wedge you inside the heads of her characters where you will feel all their pain, love, joy and sorrow. I cannot recommend this book enough if you’re looking for a story that will challenge your preconceptions.” – Nerine, You Gotta Read Reviews
This book is a great new contemporary read, so different from everything else that’s out there, and it is brilliant! Suzanne van Rooyen does a brilliant job of crafting a story that is not only entertaining and engaging, but interesting and unique too.”– Myra, Pieces of Whimsy
I loved Suzanne Van Rooyen’s writing style. It made reading her words so easy. Her characters came across as incredibly real. Add all of that into the uniqueness of the stories subject and The Other Me turned out to be a book that I absolutely loved. So much in fact that I would love to read more of these characters.” – Tracey, YA Book Addict

Aphrodite's War blog tour from GHBT {Review, Author top 10 & Giveaway}

Aphrodite despises Aries and when Zeus proposes a contest, the prize being expulsion of her enemy from Olympus, Aphrodite cannot resist. The catch: should Aries prevail it is Aphrodite who must leave her home. Risks aside, she cannot refuse the possibility of a future without her former lover.

The challenge: two mortals must fall in love. It is simple. However, the players could not be more ill-suited. Poetry, a free spirited artist and Adrian, a defense attorney would not normally choose one another. But when gods interfere anything is possible.

Aphrodite and Aries have gone from lovers to enemies over the centuries. Their constant bickering and battles are wearing thin on Zues, so he gives them a challenge. Aphrodite has to make a human fall in love, Aries has to stop it. The looser will be damned to earth for one hundred mortal years. The game is on!

Poetry and Adrian are complete opposites in every way. Poetry is a tattooed, free spirited artist and Adrian is a more grounded personality and an attorney. Sparks don't fly right away, but soon Adrian finds himself standing up for Poetry and wanting to spend more time getting to know her. But when the gods are involved, anything is possible. Will the artist and the attorney have their happily ever after, score one for Aphrodite? Or will they crash and burn giving Aries the victory?

Love, lust, betrayal, action and suspense wrapped around some astounding mythology and a couple of pissed off gods. Yes, this book is definitely a must read!!

** Warning, due to adult content this one is not recommended for anyone under 18 **

Donna Milward lives in Edmonton, Alberta in a tiny house with a huge yard. She’s been writing all her life, but decided to put writing on hold to get ‘a real job’ as a meatcutter and build a future with her beloved troll, Dan and her cats Freya, Sully, and Spartacus Jones.

Twelve years later, an invitation to a Romance Writer’s Conference in Washington D.C. led not only to new friends and new knowledge, but to the inspiration to write again. Thoeba was completed the following year.

Donna likes to mix her fascination with reincarnation and all things paranormal with her love of mythology in her work, and has even written her own myth ‘The Sacred Truth” (on earthtothoeba.blogspot.com) as the lore behind Thoeba and future novels to come.

Donna enjoys fishing, gardening and canning. Despite these hobbies, she much prefers city life.

Donna Milwards top 10 favorite Greek Gods you would want on your side!

10.  Gaia (aka Mother Earth)— As a matter of fact, it’s believed she’s the very first god.  Ancient Greeks believed her to be the planet itself and her lover was Uranus—Father Sky. Gaia formed from chaos and gave birth to the pretty much everything after that, including the gods and the titans. She’s the uber-mother.

9. Hermes (Roman name Mercury)--- He’s very popular among the other gods, known for his speed and stealth. He’s routinely employed by other deities to steal things or to sneak into the realm of death. He’s even been known to bring mortals to—and sometimes from--the gates of Hades.

8. Rhea---Who is Rhea, you ask? She’s the mother of Zeus, and the reason she’s so remarkable
is her cunning.
She ensured Zeus’ rise to power while destroying her husband for eating their children. Instead of surrendering her newborn son to be devoured, she swaddled a large stone to give to her husband. Zeus was spirited away to the island of Crete where he was raised to fulfill his destiny as slayer of Cronos and leader of the gods.

7. Prometheus---You may have heard his name before, thanks to the TV show Stargate SG-1. What you may not know is that Prometheus had a genuine love for mankind, and when Zeus forbid humans to have fire, Prometheus worried for mankind’s survival. He stole fire and brought it down to Earth.  He also taught them how to use it. For this crime, Zeus chained him to a mountain top. His only visitor was an eagle who flew to him every day to eat his liver. The organ regenerated every night, only to be consumed by the giant bird daily for centuries.

6. Dionysus--- God of wine and ecstasy…and I don’t mean the drug. Can you imagine the kind of parties this god throws? Enough said.

5. The Fates (aka the Moerae)--- Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos are the mysterious deities who measure the length of yarn that determines every mortal’s life. Zeus himself fears them, as he has no power over their decisions. It’s best to stay on their good side, lest they snip your thread short!

4. Athena (Roman name Minerva)--- She’s the goddess of wisdom and her talents include war craft and strategy. She’s been known to involve herself in battles and other affairs of men. The term ‘Extending the olive branch’ may very well have come from her involvement, as she gifted Athens with the creation of the olive tree.

3. Hecate---Perhaps the very first paranormal investigator. She’s concerned with farming by day, but at night she is the goddess of witchcraft, ghosts and tombs. You’ve probably heard ‘Amy’ from Buffy the Vampire Slayer calling on this goddess before she zaps someone with a spell.

2. Demeter---She’s a favorite, not only because she’s goddess of the harvest, but because she’s a lioness of a mother that will play hardball to protect her child. When Zeus promised her daughter Persephone to Hades without her permission, she let everything that grew on the earth die. Snow covered the ground and winter wouldn’t end until Zeus finally relented and let the new queen of death go home to her mother at least half of the year.

1. Aphrodite (Roman name Venus)--- Since her arrival on a floating cloud of pink sea foam, Aphrodite has been known as the goddess of love, beauty and fertility. The goddess accepts responsibility for love in all forms, not only romantic love.

Saugatuck Summer virtual blog tour {Review, Guest Post & Giveaway}

Saugatuck Summer
One summer can change everything.

Hi, I’m Topher Carlisle: twenty-one, pretty, and fabulous. At least, that’s what I keep telling myself. But let’s get real. Walking the fake-it-til-you-make-it road to independence and self-respect isn’t easy. Especially since my mom’s a deadbeat alcoholic, and most of my family expects me to turn out just as worthless. Oh, and I’m close to losing my college swimming scholarship, so let’s add “dropout” to the list.

My BFF has invited me to stay at her beach house on the shore of Lake Michigan. That’ll give me one summer to make money and figure out what I want to do with my life. So of course I decide to have an affair with my BFF’s married, closeted dad. Because that always works out.

Now I’m homeless, friendless, jobless. Worthless. Just like my family expects, right? Except there’s this great guy, Jace, who sees it differently. He’s got it all together in ways I can only dream of—he’s hot, creative, insightful, understanding. He seems to think I don’t give myself enough credit. And if I don’t watch out, I may start to believe him.

Topher Carlisle is at a turning point in his life. On break from school and with his financial aid almost at an end, he wonders how he will continue. He accepts his best friends offer to come stay at her beach house for the summer and look for a job there. It's the perfect set up really. A tourist town is sure to afford him a job, free room and board and the endless water to practice his swimming so he doesn't loose his scholarship and spot on the swim team. But a problem arrises in the form of the red haired and alluring older man, his best friends father.

Before Topher climbed into bed with the worst possible choice in lovers, he had a one night fling with a visiting artist, Jace. From their first meeting on the beach, Topher was taken with the mans lithe body, pale skin, dark hair, and redder than red lips. After the one night though, Jace is gone back home. But he took a piece of Topher with him with a collection of erotic photos he took. So when Topher seeks solace after the affair ends, he winds up at a local gallery and low and behold, there on the wall, are the pictures that Jace took of him.

Through a series of happy circumstances, Topher and Jace rekindle their romance and grow really close. Topher flourishes in his job at the art gallery, but he dreads the day he will have to tell Mo about his idiocy, that he'd slept with her father. And then, just as Topher always feared, everything falls apart. Mo finds out about the affair when she finds Topher's pictures in her father's office, his mom is dying and he has to go home, his sister is still an unbelievable bitch. But through it all there is one constant. Jace, he is unwavering and attentive, never leaving Topher's side. Can Topher trust Jace enough to give him his heart? He fears that he'll be hurt again, left alone again, just like he always is.

What a fantastic read about a cinder-fella sort of story where he meets his dark night, so to speak, and they may or may not ride off into the sunset together. Both men are so perfectly flawed and raw, especially Topher, he has made more than his fair share of mistakes. The one thing he has never experienced is unconditional love, and Jace can give him that. And the passion between these two jumps right off the pages and reaches deep into your gut. There is a bath house scene that is so sweaty, sticky and steamy that I had to turn the air down a notch. WOW! But it's not just about the passion with these two, it's about love and endearment as well.

The writing is essential in the story as well. Gormly created something sort of broken in the character of Topher, so broken he thinks that he doesn't deserve to be loved. And some of the mistakes he makes are a direct result of this assumption. And to balance out that self loathing she brought him Jace, to love an nurture him and show him he was worthy of every drop of affection that Jace doused him in.

Must read for all us hopeless romantics that just love when the two imperfect characters get THEIR perfect ending. Definite 5 star read.

Hi, and welcome to the Saugatuck Summer blog tour! Thank you to TTC Books and more for hosting me today! For those of you who have seen me talking about it on social media for the last nearly year and a half, you know that Saugatuck Summer was a labor of love far beyond what I would normally claim for one of my books. Of course I love them all, but Saugatuck Summer came from my very soul. Actually, I’m not certain it came from me at all.

Basically, here’s what happened: One day I was driving along, running errands, and Topher Carlisle whispered one line of dialogue in my ear. Just one. When I asked him what I was supposed to do with that, he promptly took over my brain for fifteen absolutely insane days and at the end I had the first draft of Saugatuck Summer.

Topher’s story of recovery, hope, making mistakes, and growing up just told itself, and the experience of being the conduit for that was at times grueling and heartbreaking, but also euphoric and wonderful. It was one of those experiences that, as a creator of some form of art, be it musical, visual, or literary, you have once or twice in a lifetime if you’re extraordinarily lucky, when you know you’re creating something magical. I’m not sure it will ever happen to me again, but I feel absolutely blessed that this book has come of it.

This week on the Saugatuck Summer blog tour, I’ll be sharing some bonus content from the book and a sneak peek at another upcoming book in the Saugatuck universe. I’ll also be having a heart-to-heart discussion with Marie Sexton about our experiences as adult children of alcoholics and how they translated into writing our ACOA characters from Saugatuck Summer and Family Man, giving you a peek at some of “Jace’s” art, and I’ll be sharing the official Saugatuck Summer soundtrack from a brilliant singer/songwriter of my personal acquaintance, Casey Stratton.

And finally, all week long I’ll be asking trivia questions from Saugatuck Summer and this week’s blog tour articles, and each correct answer emailed to me offers you a chance to win your choice of any of my backlist titles!
So put on your sunscreen and let’s go!

***
HOW TO WIN YOUR CHOICE OF ANY SINGLE BOOK FROM MY BACKLIST (all-in-one volumes not included):

At each stop along the blog tour I’ll be asking a trivia question from Saugatuck Summer. Yes, this means some familiarity with the book is required, whether you purchase a copy, have an ARC, or employ the Kindle or B&N lending programs. If you visit some of the other blog tour stops, you might also find the answer in some of the excerpts.

PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER IN THE COMMENTS. Instead, send the answer to me privately by using this contact form. Each response will enter you into the drawing and three winners will be picked. The more questions you answer, the more entries you get. You can choose from any of the following titles:

(Note: Giving an Inch (The Professor’s Rule #1) is already available free at Riptide, and my pre-Saugatuck novella, The Field of Someone Else’s Dreams, is available for free at Amazon, All Romance eBooks, and elsewhere.)

Again, please do not post your answer in the comments, but submit it to me privately.
To give people time to read and respond, the contest will remain open for one month after the release of Saugatuck Summer. It will close on June 19, and the drawing will be held on June 20.

Today’s Saugatuck Summer trivia question:
Chapter 37, what does Jace propose they do when Topher returns to school?

Bonus content!! I just read the companion novella, The Field of Someone Else's Dreams, here are my thoughts...

The Field of Someone Else's Dreams (Saugatuck, #.5)
Chris Boyden loved Matt VanderVeen since junior high. But growing up gay in the Bible belt of west Michigan was difficult, and unlike Matt, he wasn’t brave enough to face the prejudice head-on. Especially when his family told him over and over that he wouldn’t be able to attend college without a scholarship.

Back in high school, he worried that coming out would get him kicked off the baseball team or make recruiters reluctant to scout him. Eventually, Matt broke up with him when he couldn’t handle being Chris’s secret boyfriend any longer, but college has given them a second chance — if Chris has the courage to take it.

When a terrible injury puts Chris's baseball scholarship in jeopardy, it reminds Chris of all the reasons he stayed in the closet to begin with, and his ultra-masculine father's expectations and thoughtless homophobia aren't helping. Baseball has always been Chris's hope for the future, but now that dream could cost him Matt's love.

NOTE: This eBook novelette is a re-release. It was originally published by the Goodreads M/M Romance group as part of their Love Has No Boundaries event in June 2013.

Chris and Matt have been in a relationship a couple times now. First in high school, but Matt left Chris when he wouldn’t come out. Now in college they are trying to make a go of it again. But the same issues that drove a wedge between them before are not yet resolved. Can Chris come to terms with his sexuality and be honest with his conservative family about who he really is? Or will he allow his pride and appearances to cause the man he loves to leave him alone, again.

Chris Boyden loves baseball, he loves everything about it. The rush, the feeling and the sound when he holds that bat in his hand and hits the ball. But his reasons for playing may not be all self serving. He feels the need to provide for his family, he doesn’t want to let them down. This is a huge factor in why he hasn’t told anyone he is gay either. But the time has come to make a decision. Either Chris comes out and lives his life in the open with Matt, or he stays in the closet and looses the one thing that matters most, Matt’s love.

Matt VanderVeen has loved Chris since they were teenagers. But he wants to love him out loud. He wants to hold hands in public, kiss him whenever he wants and take vacations together. Not lie about where they are going, who they are with or what they are doing. When Chris is injured and finally comes out to his family, it would seem that Matt is getting his wish. But the regret and the backlash may be more than his lover can handle.

This book pissed me off! But not for the reason you may think. My heart broke for Chris and the struggle he was going through. The conversation with his mother in the hospital literally floored me. I wanted to reach into my kindle and strangle her! Kudos to Gormley for making the emotions and words jump off the pages and really resonate with me. Matt was as understanding as could be expected, in his situation. And it’s not often that I read a story where the character is completely honest about his feelings. Matt told Chris straight up that he loved him and he would hold on, until he couldn’t hold on anymore.

Another 5 star read from Amelia Gormley!

Fall For Me (The Rock Gods, #1)Fall For Me, Book One, The Rock Gods series.

Entertainment journalist, Ryan Pierce, meets the infamous bad-boy rocker, Dagger Drummond, and walks away with a great interview and a scandalous news bit that has the potential to turn the music world on its ear. Exposing the story would boost Ryan's career, but it would also come with the risk of ruining Dagger's privacy – and possibly his Rock God status.

The unlikely friendship that develops between Dagger and Ryan brings Ryan to question more than just his journalistic oath to report the news. It also forces him to take a look at himself and newly discovered feelings – feelings that make Ryan blind to the risk of becoming front page news himself.

Will Ryan find the courage to make a life decision to give himself true happiness with Dagger or take the path that would likely lead to heartbreak and destroy his career forever?

Take What You Want (The Rock Gods, #2)Take What You Want, Book Two, The Rock Gods series.
Mega rock star, Alex “Zander” Metcalf is burned out after nearly two years touring with his band, as well as emotionally drained after his sexual preferences were exposed by the media. He is ready for a long sabbatical – alone, and retreats to the east coast island of Martha's Vineyard; leasing an oceanside estate.
Alex seeks the quiet lifestyle of a recluse to write new material for his band, only to meet the handsome estate manager, Chase, and his gorgeous fiancée, Danni, living in the guest house on his property. Alex's hope of solitude is soon forgotten when he discovers Chase has a repressed bi-sexual side that is aching to surface and Alex is more than happy to help him explore it.
What neither Alex or Chase expects is the emotional power of their chemistry expanding to involve the three of them when Danni becomes entangled in their passion. Alex believes he has finally found his perfect menage relationship with Chase and Danni.
Sometimes two isn't enough and it takes three to complete the union of a fulfilled love. But, will their new relationship be strong enough to survive when real life wants to punish them for their unconventional love? And, can they be confident in the strength of their love to take the 'happily ever after' they can only give each other?

Make You Mine (The Rock Gods, #3)Make You Mine, Book Three, The Rock Gods series.

Cooper Rand is the high-energy drummer for his band Ivory Tower. Everyone is drawn to Cooper; which makes him the go-to party guy for those lucky enough to call him friend. He loves the lifestyle that comes along with being a rock star and feels perfectly suited for the role. He is also a professional when it comes to the hook-up, unwilling to stick around long enough to allow emotions to enter into what he's doing. He's lived his entire life 'in the moment' and it isn't until he meets Jayson that he begins to question the direction of his life and if he's been missing out on something truly special all this time.

Jayson Keller has spent most of his life living on the island of Martha's Vineyard working as a builder. Living on a small, conservative island also has Jayson working overtime to keep his sexual orientation secret. He has mastered the art of hiding in the closet, but he doesn't want it to be a forever thing. Jayson always said if the right man came along he'd happily leave the safety of his closet and live openly as a gay man. The problem is, living where he does limits his partner options and finding someone worth coming out of that closet for seems an unlikely prospect.

A party at Alex Metcalf's island estate brings Cooper and Jayson face-to-face. Lightning strikes hot and fast and suddenly their lives take a whole new path. Has Jayson finally met a man worth leaving his self-imposed closet? Have a couple of hours spent alone with Jayson opened Cooper to the idea there is a deeper meaning to life beyond the stage and the value of a committed relationship? But, a bigoted family and the rock star lifestyle could ruin everything and keep both men searching for what was standing right in front of them: a soul mate.

When Cooper Rand literally runs into Jayson Keller at a party, both their lives will change, irrevocably. The attraction is instantaneous and overwhelming, for both of them. From that first twining of the hands, it's pretty much a done deal. Now Cooper and Jayson just have to figure out in their heads what they are already feeling in their hearts.

Cooper Rand loves them and leaves them, he has a steady stream of past lovers and the no strings attached approach has always been his modus operandi. Until he met Jayson. From their first meeting he was captivated by Jayson's eyes. For the briefest moment, Cooper wasn't sure Jayson was gay, but then Jayson kissed him and stole more than just the wild drummers breath.

Jayson Keller has spent his life hiding who he was. He and his mother escaped his abusive father when he was young, only for her to choose a replacement that replaced the physical abuse with angry words. He has always explored his sexuality behind closed doors and decided when he was a young adult that his true attraction lie with other men. His mantra has always been, I'll come out when there is someone worth coming out for. Could Cooper be that person?

The two struggle with every aspect of their relationship except the physical one. Their attraction is immediate, intense and burns white hot. It's a flame that is never extinguished. It's the trust, communication, falling in love and being loved that they are having issues with. Can Coop trust Jayson to be open and honest with him about everything? Can Jay trust Cooper with his heart, and not constantly worry his new lover is falling into the arms of another. Reputations do proceed us, you know. While passion in a relationship is extremely important, so is trust and communication. If Cooper and Jayson are going to make a go of it, they will have to learn that difficult balance between the three.

Lister has created some of the most fascinating characters with her Rock Gods series. This is book 3, and while the struggles are similar with each installment, each different character definitively shows a life of their own. I loved how she took the bad boy rocker, Coop, and showed how he was completely annhialated emotionally by the good ole boy, Jayson. These two are like rabbits, which at first annoyed me, but then I realized that it was an important aspect of the story Lister was telling for these two characters. It's safe and easy for them to just fall into bed. What's difficult and hard is to talk, open up and trust each other with everything, especially their hearts.

Three dimensional and fantastically flawed characters undoubtedly bring 'Make You Mine' to life. But the in depth and detailed writing skills of Lister add a reality and a beauty to the story that would be lost otherwise. This is a must read for those that like rocker stories, true love, hopeless romantics and those HEA endings!

First Born blog tour stop {Review, Playlist & Giveaway}

Tiadone has been forced to live her entire life as a female accepted as male in her community in order to survive as a firstborn child. But when she needs to pass the rites of manhood, she finds the Creator may have use for her feminine traits after all.
You can purchase Firstborn at the following Retailers:

Tiadone is lives a life that is a lie, forced to live as a boy in a society where first born girls are left to die. Her father hid her sexuality and declared her a boy, she even has an amulet she wears to help her keep her secret. When she reaches maturity, she is expected to leave home and fight to defend it. But she will never be able to live the life that is expected of her and have a life worth living. Will she find love? Have children, a family of her own? How long can she keep the fact that she is, in fact, female a secret?

As the story progresses, Tiadone struggles with her responsibilities. There are challenges both in the pretense she's led her entire life and with defending her home. She does indeed find someone to love, but she can't share that love, for obvious reasons. To spite her struggles and the inability to truly be herself, Tiadone has a certain quality, a humanity to her that is very endearing.

The story flowed well and the chapters were concise, crisp and short. I read this entire book in one setting as I easily got lost in the story and in the characters. Grover did a great job with world building as well, but there are a lot of unanswered questions, and so much more to explore with both this world and these characters. I look forward to the next book in this series.

Must read for Dysptopian YA fans, I'm reminded of Hunger Games and Landry Park when reading this story. 5 star read!

Lorie Ann Grover is an awarded YA novelist and board book author whose works include Kirkus Starred Review, Firstborn, and Parents Magazine Best Children’s Book, Bedtime Kiss for Little Fish. She co-founded readergirlz and readertotz. Living with her husband in the foothills of Mt. Rainier, she writes, practices weapons tai chi, and watches hawks take flight.
