Cat's Review of In the Nick of Time (Subpar Heros) by Elle Keaton @ellekeatonauthor @neonrainbowarcreviews @tammystwocents X- @PirateQueenRdz1 @TTCBooksandmore

Have you always thought you were special?

Perennially unemployed loner Nick Sedgewick applies to an online job opening with that exact phrase and expects nothing to come of it. It was likely a no-so-funny prank after all.

If Doug 'Long Shot' Swanson wanted a new work partner he'd hire one himself. He's perfectly happy on his own and if he plays his cards right he'll retire sooner rather than later. And he certainly wouldn't hire an irritating spicy-candy-eating slacker who'd probably miss his own funeral.

But somebody is killing off agents and Nick's new boss needs Doug and Nick to figure out who it is and put a stop to it. And if they accidentally fall in love along the way that is no one's business but their own.

Neither man wants to be a hero. But maybe between the two of them, they can save the world. Or at least their little corner of it.

In the Nick of Time is a part of the multi-author Subpar Superheroes MM romance series

Cat gives this book 5 meows with a 2 purr heat index...

This is part of the Subpar Series shared world but stands alone just fine.

I'm going to start by first saying, when you get this book completely suspend all sense of believability, it is fiction after all. I'm not sure how to categorize the story, it's in a league of its own, so I'll just say superheroes. Or should I say Subpar heroes

This book is absolutely hilarious and oh so much fun. There's a touch of mystery, lots of twists and turns and humor. If you just need something to take you away and make you smile or giggle, this will do it. If you're not sold yet, how about a talking turtle?

If you like Super Heros with a twist, forced proximity (one bed), grumpy/sunshine, unique pets and lots of laughs; this is definitely for you.

Broken, broody, mysterious, swoony, inclusive; those are my tropes.

It’s my grandmother’s fault! Alice Lee bribed me to read with a Nancy Drew box set—and changed my life forever.

Love at first binge read.

By the time high school rolled around I’d already discovered romantic suspense and gothic romance, and I’ve never looked back. What can I say? My love of mystery and suspense started early and runs deep.

Is there anything better than a character who by the end of the story manages to redeem/heal themselves enough to fall in love? No, there isn’t.

Fast forward to 2017 when, with a shaky finger, I pressed the Publish button for the first time. I’ve never regretted it. I love writing and telling stories that others enjoy, it’s a dream come true.

What else? I love both cats and dogs. Star Wars and Star Trek. Pineapple on pizza, and have a cribbage habit my husband encourages. We live in a log cabin near Hood Canal in Washington State, if the sky is clear at night the milky way is visible. But most often I’m inside devouring yet another book!

Can Clem, Abe and Humphrey sustain their burgeoning romance from outside threats?

And might their connection blossom into lasting romance?

Blurb

In Regency London, during the Season, after a brief and steamy courtship, the relationship between threesome Clem, Abe and Humphrey holds much promise.

But their busy routines and different lifestyles, as a professional secretary, society gentleman and an official informant to the military, interfere with their burgeoning romance.

Then sinister forces reappear to threaten their connection and even the life of one of the trio.

Can these three band together to save the day and keep each other from peril? And given the chance, might they forge lasting happiness together?

Excerpt

Abe entered the Ye Olde Cheddar Cheese tavern closer to eight o’clock than seven. Clem was sitting at their usual table, alone and forlorn. Abe cursed the informant who had delayed him.

Abe approached, attracting Clem’s notice. His aspect didn’t brighten. There was no teasing smile of welcome.

Instead, Abe received a chilly glare.

“You came then,” Clem said flatly.

Abe sat opposite his friend and lover. “Can I get you another drink?”

“If you like.”

Clem’s glacial indifference continued when their gin was served together with a jug of water.

He said casually, “I was at the Old Red Lion yesterday to find you’d vacated your room. I thought you might have run out on us.”

He took a swig of barely diluted gin, avoiding Abe’s eyes.

“I’m sorry, Clem. I should have let you know.”

If they had been in a less public place or one that catered solely for their kind, Abe would have covered Clem’s hand with his own.

“Yes, well, it’s not like you owe me an explanation.” Clem’s defensive posture said otherwise.

“Of course I do. It was remiss of me. I have been occupied with pressing matters, official-like.”

Clem’s body relaxed slightly. Abe hardly made it public that he was working for Horse Guards, but he had shared that confidence with his lovers. He eyed Abe warily under long light brown lashes, a distinct pout to his lush mouth.

“You could have sent word to me.”

“Yes, I should have. I see that now. I didn’t mean to hurt you, Clem.”

“Who said I was hurt?” Clem’s indifferent words were at odds with his wounded expression.

“Just because I’ve been busy doesn’t mean that I haven’t been thinking of you. And Humphrey, too. I’ve missed you both.”

“Really?”

“I swear it.”

“Then it’s fortunate that I left a note for Humphrey to meet us here after he’s dined.” Clem’s narrow jaw clenched combatively.

He’s not letting me off lightly. At least he’s still talking to me and hasn’t flounced off in a huff, renouncing me forever.

It wasn’t the right moment to argue that either Clem or Humphrey could have taken the initiative earlier. Abe recognised that Humphrey was too self-effacing to make the first move. As for Clem, he’d learned the hard way to be sparing with his trust.

“I’m sorry,” Abe said sincerely. “I’ll say it a hundred times over if that will make amends.”

Abe was the first to admit that once he got the bit between his teeth, he could be ruthlessly single-minded. Apart from his mother, he’d never had to consider anyone’s feelings. Until now.

That must change, he vowed.

“I’ll gladly apologise to Humphrey. I’ve neglected you both. You know what I’m like when I’m in full cry.”

There was a brief silence as the waiter topped up their glasses.

“We all have our burdens,” Abe added. “You’re chained to your desk during the day, I’m no longer my own master and Humphrey has a flock of relatives to shepherd.”

Clem smiled grudgingly. “Is that an excuse?”

“No, more a recognition of our circumstances. What say you if we make this our regular rendezvous? This is as good a place as any to meet every few days. That should avoid any further misunderstandings.”

“I thought you’d left me.”

Clem’s voice was so low that Abe’s strained to catch the words against the background noise of the narrow tavern.

“I’d never abandon you, Clem. I may have many faults, but I’m no fool. I would never throw away such a treasure unthinkingly.”

Clem stared in his glass.

“Now I’ve found you and Humphrey,” Abe continued. “I won’t let go easily unless that’s your will.”

Clem gazed at Abe, his face unreadable. Then he glanced over Abe’s shoulder.

“You have an opportunity to repeat your abject apology. Humphrey’s coming this way.”

She wants to rip him apart when she sees him again but instead, a bond sparks between them and all her righteous fury is suddenly wrapped up in the confusing need to be mated with this man she hates.

Only the truth can set them free.

Can Logan and Wren manage to put the past behind them or will the need for revenge ultimately destroy them… and their pack?

Cat gives this book 3 Meows with a 3 purr heat index...

This story has a lot of potential. I liked the fated Mates and enemies to lovers' aspect.

There's a bit of mystery, but I would have liked that more expounded on. Instead of it seemed Logan leaving over what happened to his ex, Lark, Wren's sister, was repeated a lot.

If what the old Alpha was doing and why he got ill was on page there'd been more excitement while reading, and this could've been a five.

Having said that, I call it werewolf lite. It's not dark or gory and the stuff the old alpha did is off page so for some this will be perfect.

Cat's Review of Pretty Buoy (Swallow Cove book 2) by DJ Jamison @author_dj_jamison @neonrainbowarcreviews @tammystwocents X- @DJ_Jamison_ @TTCBooksandmore

He's only playing boyfriend to protect me, but Brooks Riggins is everything I need.

After leaving my toxic boyfriend, I flee to my family vacation home in Swallow Cove. Which takes me directly into the path of broody bar manager Brooks Riggins.

He's large and intimidating, but with a protective streak that I didn't see coming. When my ex gives me trouble, Brooks tells him to take a hike. Not only that, he also claims to be my new man.

Brooks is as straight as they come, but he's ready to step up and play the part.

In fact, it may not just be pretend, judging by the way Brooks looks at me. Especially when he catches sight of me in the lingerie I sometimes wear.

My ex said the lingerie made me too feminine. Too weak.

Just a pretty boy.

But as Brooks hands me all the power I need to heal and be intimate again, I can finally see the truth.

am apretty boy, and it doesn't make me weak at all.

In fact, I never have to be weak again.

But can I be strong enough to trust another man with my heart?

Pretty Buoy is Book 2 of Swallow Cove. It can be read as a standalone, but it may be more enjoyable to read Book 1 for an introduction to all the characters in the series.

Trigger Warning: past abuse, toxic ex-boyfriend.

Cat gives this book 5 meows...
This is book 2 of Swallow Cove series. It does stand alone well, but also goes in time with book 1, so reading in order you already know Brooks and some of the other characters.

Speaking of characters, there are so many fun ones. Danny at the coffee shop is hilarious and Brooks grandma a hoot.

There is lots of action with the reappearance of Skylar's ex, and the fake boyfriend angle plus Brooks living arrangement and grandmother makes lots of good conflict.

Oh, did I mention Brooks is totally straight and Skylar likes lingerie?

One of my favorite tropes is Gay for you and DJ Jamison does it so well.

As always by this author you can count on fun, sweet romance, humor and a HEA.

If you like Hurt/comfort, Gay for you/gay awaking, slow burn, friends to lovers, boss/coworker, class difference, fake boyfriend, pretty lingerie, cute cats, and a HEA this is definitely for you!

DJ Jamison writes romances about everyday life and extraordinary love featuring a variety of queer characters, from gay to bisexual to asexual. Blue Falcon: An OPS Protector Romance (Owens Protective Services Book 20) by Giulia Lagomarsino Book Tour with Cat's Review X- @EJBookPromos @crzybookladyluv @TTCBooksandmore

Author: Giulia Lagomarsino
Genre: Protector Romance/Romantic Suspense
Release Date: July 22, 2024
Cover Design: T.E. Black Cover Design
Cover Model: Ammon

They bet me she would turn my world upside down.

I took that bet.
There’s no way I’ll fall for the heiress who is more obsessed with her hair than her safety.
Yes, that’s the pot calling the kettle black.

I carry a comb on me at all times, and the guys love to razz me for it.
But looking good isn’t a crime.
So I’m a little obsessed with my hair.
Yes, I like good facial creams and moisturizers.
But no one ever got shot for holding a comb.

However, this woman could very well be the death of me.
Long legs, killer body, and the chemistry between us…
I can’t keep my hands off.
I’m bound to get fired.

And if it weren’t for this damn stalker sending her creepy letters, I might throw up my hands and walk away just to save my sanity.
But I have to be here.
And the longer I’m here, the more I’ve come to realize that there is no walking away.

I’m gonna lose that damn bet.

Cat gives this book 5 meows with a 4 purr heat Index...

This is book 20 in the series, and you do need to read in order, most books focus on 1 couple with a storyline between them that is at least a HFN. And though each story is original and unique, you never know what may happen.

Brock is one of the original cast and a real piece of work. He's never been a favorite character of mine, but I'll say this story was well worth the read and he was well redeemed.

There is lots of action, a little mystery, and it's chock full of humor. We get more Fox and that's always fun.

If you like a good protector romance, interesting characters, forced proximity, enemies to lovers and a lot of humor and heat this is for you.

★★★★★ Stars from Cajun Heat Book Blog - “The storyline is fast paced, laugh out loud funny at times, suspenseful and romantic. It also proves the craziness people, especially our gang from OPS, will go to for love.”

★★★★★ Stars from Pat on Goodreads - “Wow, all I can say is this was a fantastic read.”

★★★★★ Stars from Lori on Goodreads - “As usual, with Giulia's books I was laughing so hard just a few pages in.”

I'm a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, "No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book." I didn't think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn't already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven't been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.
