Cat's Audiobook Review of Digging Deep Written by Jay Hogan Narrated by Gary Furlong @jayhoganauthor @garyfurlongvo @neonrainbowarcreviews @tammystwocents X- @jayhoganauthor @GaryFurlongVo @TTCBooksandmore

2020 Lambda Literary Award Finalist in Gay Romance

Drake Park has a complicated life. As a gay male midwife, he’s used to raising eyebrows. Add Crohn’s Disease and things get interesting—or not, considering the sad state of his love life. Experience has taught Drake that most men are fair weather sailors when it comes to handling his condition—gone for dust when things get rough. Staying healthy is a fulltime job without adding in any heartbreak, so a little loneliness is a small price to pay. If he says it often enough he might even believe it. One thing for sure, the cop who arrested him isn’t about to change that.

Caleb Ashton does not have a complicated life. A senior detective with the Whangarei Police Department, he likes his job and is good at it. He works hard and plays hard, happy to enjoy as many men as he can while he’s still young enough—or at least he was. These days he feels adrift for the first time in his life, and the only thing sparking his interest—a certain prickly young midwife.

But can Drake find enough faith to risk opening his heart again? And does Caleb have what it takes to cope with the challenges Drake’s condition presents?

Note: One of the main characters in this book is a midwife and there is an account of an emergency delivery and the loss of a baby.

Cat gives this Audiobook 5 meows for the story; 5 meows for the performance with a 3 purr heat indes...
 trigger warning...read the book blurb.

Digging Deep is such a beautiful story. I love stories with a physically challenged character. Drake is such a wonderful character. He is an activist, a male midwife, business owner with 2 partners and has a moderate case of Chrones.  If his is moderate I'd hate to see bad. He's also mixed race. I loved seeing a bit of the Asian too. And then we had Caleb. The exact opposite.  Hardworking, hard playing lead detective that arrests Drake for entering a public building during a protest...during one of his outbreaks. At first I disliked Drake, but he worked his way in.

This story is so beautiful and has some heartbreaking moments. It's a bit of a slow burn but the sexual tension is there. All the side characters are awesome and both have amazing friends and family.

The narration is very good. I do wish there had been more distinction between characters, but the accent, pacing and emotion all make up for it. I'd definitely relisten to this.

Cat's Review of Marshmallow Mountain (Big Boys Small Spaces Book 1) by A.J. Truman and M.A. Wardell @ajtruman_author @mawardellauthor @neonrainbowarcreviews @tammystwocents X- @TTCBooksandmore

What’s worse than being snowed in with your ex? Literally nothing.

Initially, the only thing Marshall and Marshall had in common was a name. Marshall (aka Data) lived his life around spreadsheets, while Marshall (aka Marsh) was an F5 tornado of chaos. Yet for eight years, they were madly in love. Until Marsh abruptly ended things with a half-baked excuse.

Six months later, Data gets a text from Marsh out of the blue: they need to clean out their cabin in Maine and sell it ASAP. He can make it through one more weekend with the man who broke his heart.

Marsh loved adding squiggles to the straight lines of his boyfriend. If only he could’ve lived up to the potential Data saw in him. If only he didn’t feel like he was one big miscalculation on Data’s ledger. Saying goodbye to Marshmallow Mountain will be the final tie to sever, even though he still pines for his number-crunching teddy bear.

But when a massive snowstorm traps them in their small cabin for days, they’re forced to confront hard truths about their breakup…as well as resist the sweltering heat raging between them.

These boys might be headed for a second act, but only if they can make it off Marshmallow Mountain.

Cat gives this book 5 meows with a 5 purr Index...

The story is sweet, funny, fun and extra spicy.

I loved both characters and that both men are large and not the sexy muscle up kind.
I also found both being Marshall's funny as well. It's a funny character driven story with the forced proximity and snowed in plot.

So, if you like second chances, forced proximity, opposites attract, snowed in, larger men and lots of heat; then this is for you.

Jesus. Will the rain ever fucking stop?

Hustling down Second Avenue, with little reprieve from the endless downpour, I try to pull my heavy canvas jacket closed, my flannel shirt and black jeans are practically plastered to my body. Water sloshes into my work boots as I try to navigate glistening puddles pooling on the sidewalk.

I’m soaked to the bone.

Like most native Seattleites, I don’t own a fucking umbrella.

Stubbornly stupid.

Ah, fuck it. I deserve to be wet and uncomfortable. After the day I’ve had, I might as well get the flu on top of it.

Finally, I spy the green awning up ahead despite the darkened skies. A few more steps and I push through door of the Metropolitan Grill, a Seattle steakhouse institution. Veering left to avoid the hostess, I take a seat at the bar in all my damp glory.

Settling onto my usual stool with embarrassingly practiced ease, I’m self-aware enough to realize it’s an act of defiance against my wicked cravings. My eyes, inadvertently—or advertently, who the fuck knows—drift to the rows of amber bottles gleaming against the under light of the glass shelving.

Particularly to the whiskey. Lord, what I’d give for a fucking taste. How I’d savor it. Vanilla and smoky oak. Sweet notes of caramel and honey. A hint of fruit, either orange zest or a slice of crisp apple. I shut my eyes and practically feel the warmth enveloping me in a comforting glow, radiating through every vein and easing the burdens of my mind. Soothing the aches of my soul. Wrapping around me like a soft, fluffy blanket on a shitty Seattle night.

It’s been over a year since I’ve had a sip. Even though every day is a battle, I haven’t been tempted in months. Today, though, the fight feels harder. The liquor more alluring.

Freddy, the bartender whom I’ve known for years, sets down a tonic water with lime in front of me. I grip the cool, clear glass tightly, hoping the lime’s sharp scent will override the memory of peat and warmth. The guy in a suit two seats down orders a Red Breast neat. My jaw clenches with envy. The liquid gold catches the light as Freddy pours it with an easy flick of the wrist.

Mesmerizing.

Tamping down the old, familiar ache, I turn away. Focus on the clink of glasses and the murmur of conversations around me—anything to drown out the noise in my head. It’s a silent struggle, unseen by the laughing customers in the busy restaurant.

I take a sip of my tonic, the fizz biting at my tongue. It’s a pale imitation of what I truly crave, but at least it’s safe. Necessary. I’m fully aware of the consequences if I were to give in to my demons. I’ve lived and breathed them and won’t live one more day with regret coiling in my gut. Still, I need something…more.

“Hey, man. Can I get a hot coffee?” I tap the polished wood with my finger to get Freddy’s attention. “I’m soaking wet and fucking freezing.”

“Sure.” Seconds later he hands me a steaming mug. “Cream or sugar?”

“Both.” I slide a twenty toward him. Coffee is no substitute for the nectar of the gods, but at least it will warm me up and keep me sober.

Hell, it’s no small feat considering what happened today. Suddenly, I’m on the brink of losing my shit and I have no one to blame but myself.

Well, maybe my stupid, inherited addiction genes. Memories of my da’s spiral into alcoholism invade my thoughts. Barely a teenager when he crashed and burned. I was instrumental in helping him rebuild the business he founded once he got sober. A decade ago, I took over as CEO and now McGloughlin Construction, is the biggest game in town. For what?

A terrible mistake I made three years ago coming back to haunt me and destroy all my hard work?

Mended Hearts (Broken & Mended series Book 2) by Erika Ashby Blog tour with Cat's Review @authorerikaashby @enticingjourney @tammystwocents X- @ErikaAshby @EJBookPromos @TTCBooksandmore

Title: Mended Hearts
Series: Broken & Mended Series Book 2
Author: Erika Ashby
Genre/Tropes: Contemporary; Military Romance
Release Date: October 25, 2024
Cover Design: Perfect Pear Creative Covers

Dustin Adams was once known for his down-to-earth, carefree spirit. He was the well-rounded kid with a promising future—until the girl he loved was yanked from his life.

Now, Dustin is distant and cold. He pushes everyone away and clings to his solitude. Angry and bitter, he is simply a shell of the boy he once was. Living the Army life, the close calls he survives daily only further harden his heart—until she reappears in his life.

Echo Price grew up living a nomad lifestyle until her evangelistic father decided to put roots down in a small Georgia town. She loved singing, pitching, and despite her father’s disapproval, quickly fell for a boy named Dustin. The war between her heart’s desires and the rules her overly protective father enforced came at a price they all paid.

Thirteen years later she comes face to face with the boy who had once stolen her heart. Faced with an emotional dilemma, she must navigate the feelings the encounter rekindles. What some might view as a stroke of fate feels more like a cruel joke to Echo, as Dustin is now headed back to war with Brian—her husband.

But sometimes fate has a way of stringing souls together when it’s least expected, proving it’s never too late for mended hearts.

Cat gives this book 5 meows with a 1 purr index...

This is book 2 in the Broken and Mended series. There is a prologue and the back story fills in a lot, so you can read alone, but I suggest reading in order because of the way the last book ends.

Oh, I loved Dustin and Echo's story. I loved Echo in book one but reading her own story brought tears to my eyes.

Echo was a Preacher's daughter and he was very controlling.

Dustin was a normal senior in high school and it was love at first sight when he saw the new Preacher's daughter sing.

But life for teenagers seem one way then fate takes it another direction.

I did like the twists and how things circled back.

It was such a beautiful story spanning many years... so do we get Brian next?

Erika Ashby grew up an Army Brat, spending most of her childhood in Oklahoma, where she finally put roots down. Knowing she had failed all writing assignments in school, she set out on this journey mainly to prove to herself she could do it. So, here she is today, proving it. Victoria’s life isn’t as perfect as it seems. But with two homicide detectives on her doorstep, it’s about to get a lot worse.

Still reeling from the shocking discovery that her husband is having a passionate affair with his real estate client, Victoria struggles to process the mind-blowing news that Nick’s lover is dead—brutally murdered in cold blood on the very same evening she uncovered the truth.

And now two detectives are on her doorstep, waiting to question both of them. Is she a suspect?

With little hard evidence and no shortage of suspects with “killer motives,” Detectives Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez are under intense pressure to solve the high-profile murder case that rocks the picturesque village of Tarrytown just as the town is gearing up for the area’s annual Halloween festivities and an influx of tourists.

EXCERPT:

Victoria was home working off some nervous energy as she put the dishes away and wiped yesterday’s smudges off the white Shaker cabinet doors. Out the kitchen window, the sun sparkled magically on the Hudson River reflecting the scarlet and gold of the fall foliage clinging to its steep banks. Her melancholy mood from the evening before had turned to excitement, bolstered by a bit too much caffeine on an empty stomach and her Alanis jams playing in the background. She had already called her attorney and had an appointment for next week. She would put all that out of mind until then. Today, she had a meeting scheduled at her office at eleven this morning, an important one, and her benefit dinner tonight. It was now half past nine and she needed to get going. She was almost finished emptying the dishwasher in her methodical manner–only a few cups were left–when her cell phone vibrated against the granite island countertop, its dark surface blending in with the stone. She reached over to grab it. There was a text from her husband: It’s an emergency. Call me.

There were also three missed calls from him and a voicemail. Nick was not given to hyperbole. Quite the opposite. He was actually a bit too laid back, never worrying much about anything. He had never sent a text like that before. She called immediately, not bothering to check her voicemail, putting it on speaker as she finished her chores.

“Vic?” His voice was soft, almost apologetic. He didn’t seem hurt or in danger.

“Nick. What is it?” She felt mildly annoyed, already.

“I have something to tell you, and I’m warning you it’s pretty shocking.” Was he actually going to confess about the affair now? Over a cell call? That was totally unlike him.

“I have to get to work, Nick. What’s so urgent?” She was starting to wish she’d ignored his text.

“My client. From the Shady Hill property. The one I went to see last night? The police called me. She was found dead. At her house. This morning.”

Victoria placed the last clean mug on the counter. Dead? A heart attack or something? No. The police wouldn’t call Nick for something like that. There had to be more to it. She picked up the phone and took it off speaker.

“What happened?” She wasn’t sure she wanted to know the answer.

“I don’t know, but a homicide detective is meeting me at the house any minute now. They called and wanted to meet with me in person. ‘See if I could shed some light on it,’ was how he put it. Jeff told me to meet them at our house, not at the station.”

“Homicide? She was murdered?” Victoria had to hand it to Nick. This certainly reached the bar of ‘emergency.’

“They didn’t say that, exactly. He said he’d tell me more in person. I don’t know much more than you do at this point. What if I was the last person to see her alive, Vic?” Nick’s voice was shakier now, almost panicky.

“So? You’re certainly not responsible for her death?”

“That’s what Jeff said.”

“What does Jeff have to do with this? You called Jeff before you called me?” She thought that sounded like the actions of a guilty person, reaching out to your attorney friend. But guilty of what?

“He’s an attorney! And he knows her! I told you, remember? They had that law suit going. Let’s not do this now. Please!” His tone was harsher now, devoid of sentimentality. “I just wanted to give you a heads-up. The detective might get there before I do. They’ll probably want to question you too. Tell them I’m on my way. I’d appreciate some support. I’m your husband, Victoria, please try to remember that.” He hung up.

She picked up the mug she’d left on the counter, looking out to the sun’s rays sparkling on the Hudson, her thoughts suspended in the timeless currents of the flowing river. It was all starting to hit her now, just what a disaster this was. The photos that were supposed to liberate her from the marriage were now a liability, potentially placing her at a crime scene. What do detectives look for? Means, motive, and opportunity? She had two out of three for now. Should she be worried? And what about Nick? He was acting strangely last night, and she’d attributed it to a guilty conscience. The affair, she assumed. But could it have been more? She knew Nick wasn’t overtly violent, but anyone could commit murder given the right circumstances. What if the woman had gotten pushy? Demanding? Threatening? How far would Nick go to protect what was his? She needed time to think, consult with an attorney. But she didn’t have the luxury of time.

The gate buzzer sounded, jolting her out of her stupor, and the mug slipped from her hand, shattering into pieces on the travertine tile floor. She quickly picked up the big chunks, but the shards of porcelain would have to wait.
