Find out more at www.catseyechronicles.com

A plague is spreading across the land. Crops are rotting. People are dying in the streets. Sora, with the help of her magical Cat's Eye necklace, is the only one who can stop it.

She must travel overseas to the Lost Isles, a place of legend and mystery. Only there can she destroy the bloodmage, Volcrian, putting an end to the curse. She is accompanied by Crash, a lethal assassin who once threatened—and saved—her life. But Sora is beginning to question her dark companion. He seems to be carrying a secret; a hidden past that could endanger them all.

Meanwhile, they are hunted by an underground society known as the Shade. For centuries, the Shade has waited for the perfect opportunity to step into the light. Now they are perilously close to resurrecting a Dark God and unleashing a wave of unimaginable destruction. They only need to collect the three sacred weapons, and Sora has already found two....

She Said/ She Said review for Volcrian's Hunt!!

My favorite aspect to this book was the hunt. All the while Sora, Crash and their companions are hunting the sacred weapons, Volcrian is hunting them. He wants Crash for revenge and he wants Sora for her power. What did you like most about the book Jess?
Pretty close to what you liked Tammy! I like the adventure that we get to embark on. The constant suspense to what's going to happen next. I like how the flow of the book kept you entertained at every page! Exactly how I like it!

Sora has become one of my favorite fictional characters. She's loyal to a fault. With her friends, family and even strangers. She's grown both physically and personally so much throughout the series. The spoiled little girl has grown into a beautiful and fierce young woman. What do you like about Sora Jess?
Wow that's like a loaded question Tams! The author has created a female lead that even when she was "younger" and we first met her I loved her. She has grown in her strength both physically and emotionally. She has always been faithful to who she is and what she believes in. What I love about Sora the best is she never lost herself. Even thrown into something unexpected she remains who she is while still growing to be something she wants to be...does that make sense? Lol

Crash is just absolutely delicious! He will stop at nothing to protect Sora all the while he's pushing her away. And then there is the bad boy assassin attitude that he has perfected over the years. When he goes into killing mode, oh my word he's so sexy. More of Crash's past is uncovered in this story as well, his training as an assassin and choosing his name. It was extremely interesting getting under his skin. What do you like about Crash Jess?
Ay-ya-yai!! Crash is so swoon worthy isn't he! He's like someone created that is so wrong to love but still you can't help it. He has this bad boy demeanor that is not fabricated. This guy is hard core killer. His softness is a rare commodity that shows through only towards specific things happening around him. That has to be my favorite part about him. In all the ways he shows us he is this strong assassin somewhere in there we eventually get human emotion. Plus it helps that T.L. Shreffler has designed him to be a total babe! Hahaha

Lori and Ferran, oh my. Their interactions with each other were just priceless. I wonder just how close these two were in the past, and what role he'll play in Lori and Sora's lives in the future. Lori is a healer and Ferran possesses a Cat's Eye, like Sora, so perhaps they can balance each other in a way no one else can. What do you think of Lori and Ferran Jess?
I agree again here Tams! It's like you're taking the words out of my mouth! This author has created characters that interact so well even in their arguments or disagreements she's created flawless interactions and connections between characters and readers. These two were new and they were equally accepted in my eyes to the story. Nothing is accidental, I'm beginning to believe...I'm thinking the author knows exactly the way the future will play out for Ferran, Sora and Lori.

Overall this book was full of action and suspense, and who knew that once Sora and Crash started kissing, they wouldn't be able to stop! I loved the romance and mystery that kept a steady pace throughout.Twists and turns will keep the reader guessing, and even though one threat may be extinguished, another presents itself. What are your final thoughts on the book Jess?
Holy moly! Is that a secret Tams? The kiss? I know it's one all fans were waiting for! I almost read too fast through the story because I just knew it had to happen eventually right!! Then bam the author finally gives us the connection that's been there alllllll along! Phew! Thank you!! If it wasn't going to happen in Volcrian's Hunt I was going to go all pitchfork on the author!! Hahaha J/k! Maybe. ;) anyway-- yes there's always a new story unfolding and a new predicament our crew finds themselves in. I love that T.L. kept us constantly enthralled. She's done that since the first book Sora's Quest so it's no surprise that the writing keeps getting stronger and the story keeps getting deeper. I'm in love with this series! Where can we get these signed? Seriously. I need them! #TeamSora!! #TeamCrash!! I give this book my thumbs up!
I agree, this book, this series is a Must Read!!

Jayson James “Finding Our Way” Celebrating A Year of Publication

Justin Parker and Derrick Wilson have been best friends since meeting back in middle school. Currently they are in their junior year at Chandler High School, and living the good life as teenagers. They have great girlfriends, plenty of close friends, their own cars, and parents who are well off. As nice as things might look to an outsider, something is missing from each of their lives.

Justin has become the invisible son in the midst of his parents failing marriage. In an effort to get his parent’s attention, Justin keeps getting into trouble. So far he has been able to get away with anything without facing any repercussions, while Derrick is feeling distant and tired of what he feels is a too “perfect family”. He just wants to have a normal social life and spend time with his friends without the pressures from his family to spend time with them. With blurring the lines of friendship in the process to realizing what was missing and discovering who they really are.

Justin and Derrick take turns narrating the story of their junior year in high school and all of the events that take place in their lives. Being a teenager can be tough. Being gay can be tougher. For Derrick and Justin they are both, and life cannot get any more complicated.

What happens when two best friends cross the boundaries of friendship? Will they be able to be happy together? Will they keep their secret?

Tam's review of Finding Our Way

“You tell it from your perspective. Then I will tell it from mine.”
Justin Parker and Derrick Wilson have been the best of friends since meeting back in
middle school. Both of them are now in their junior year at Chandler High School, and
are living the good life as teenagers. They have great girlfriends, plenty of close friends,
their own cars, and parents who are well off. As nice as things might look to an outsider,
something is missing from both of their lives.
Justin and Derrick both take turns narrating the story of their junior year in high school
and all of the events that take place in each of their lives. Being a teenager can be
tough. Being gay can be tougher. For Derrick and Justin they are both, and life cannot
get any more complicated.

It has been a year now since Jayson James published “Finding Our Way” his debut
novel and brought about two follow-up novels throughout the next year. I had a chance
to ask Jayson James some questions that other readers and myself had. Below are the
questions that Jayson was asked and his responses to them.

How did Finding Our Way come to be?

The story itself was an idea I’ve had for years, but was never able to figure out how to
write it. I thought it would be boring told from one characters perspective and never
even given any thought to telling it from both of their point of view. I wrote the part with
Derrick and Janie at the burger place after having a similar experience myself. This
was actually the first part of the book that I wrote. I had imagined myself being younger
and having an encounter with this guy who would later become Brad. I wrote a couple
of pages and saved them to my desktop. A month later, I had an idea about this guy
being the same age as Brad, checking of him out and feeling conflicted about a drunken
episode with his best friend. The biggest struggle I had when I first started the book
was that I hated how the story unfolded in third person, yet I didn’t feel it worked being
told by only one of the characters. I struggled with this for over a week and almost
abandoned the idea. Then one morning I woke up with the idea of Justin and Derrick
telling their story together. Once I had this figured out, the ideas flowed. I shared my
ideas with a friend, ironing out the details, she in turn would insist I write it and I would.
As the weeks wore on, I realized that I was writing a book and not a story as I had
planned. Next thing I knew I had finished the book, another friend read it and loved it
enough to edit and convince me to publish it. I am so glad that I did all of it, rather than
just thinking about doing it.

Who was your favorite character in Finding Our Way to write, and why?

Justin Parker is my favorite character. Although I do not believe, I realized it when I
was writing him. He is a flawed, but a lovable character. One of my favorite things
about him is he is a handsome, outgoing guy who could have any good-looking guy he
wanted, but he chooses to be with this guy who he knows is beautiful on the inside and
has spent years bonding with.

Derek and Justin’s home lives are very different, one coming from a stable family,
while the other’s parents are on the brink of divorce. Which is closest to your own
experience growing up?

Justin’s home life was my own, without the alcohol. The Thanksgiving Justin
experienced was one of the more mild dysfunctional holidays I experienced at his age.
Much too often the stress was so bad, I’d come close to snapping, and things were on
the verge of hitting a point of no return. Yet somehow, I overcame. To this day, I still
struggle when it comes to the holidays, although things have gotten much better.

What is the balance between reality and fantasy with the characters Justin and
Derrick?

Most of Justin and Derrick’s story has been made up based upon my own life
experiences. Sure there are some of their story that is true, but I will never tell what
parts are. Those who know me, know what is true and what is made up. I have always
tried to keep the characters based in reality. Though there is a story (a dream Justin
has) where Derrick and he have super powers. I have notes written here and there, but
nothing in the works beyond what I think would only be a short story.

Will Tyler and Tyson have a book of their own? How about Hayden and Ryan?

Yes, though I am not sure how soon it will be finished. I started a book with Tyler and
Tyson several years ago, but it soon became a project I abandoned. When I started
writing Finding Our Way I knew I wanted to use these two as friends of Derrick and
Justin. My editor and friends I have told about the story, have all expressed how much
they would love to see this be one of my upcoming projects I finish.
As far as Hayden and Ryan, they were characters in a book I started a couple of years
back. Much of that book I used in Tormented Discovery. Though they are a favorite
of many of my readers, I do not have any current plans for a book featuring the two of
them.

Are there plans for a final chapter in their (Justin and Derrick) story? Wedding,
children, happily ever after?

Oh! The proverbial burning question, I’ve managed to dodge. To be honest, I would
like to write at least one more story with Derrick and Justin as the main characters. I’ve
recently run a couple of ideas by my friend and editor. She agrees with my feeling that I
would like to put out at least one book that is not part of the series. As one keen reader
has noted, Finding Our Way was book 1 and then Tormented Discovery was released
as book 2 in the series, while Drifting was released as a story in itself. Keep a watch
out, because I can tell you that I have not written the last of Derrick and Justin.

How did you come up with Chandler, the place where most of your books take
place?

I always loved how Stephen King’s books were written in the same place, as if it was a
place I had lived or known. Kevin Smith had did this with his movies, again I felt as if
these were people I knew and connected to. Chandler is loosely based upon the town I
grew up in, as Sweetwater the city south of it where we used to often go out to.

What is the most frequently asked question by the fans?

“Do you like writing or drawing better?” My answer to this question is it depends on
my mood. Sometimes I feel more inclined to write and other times I am more in a
disposition for drawing. Every now and then I will bounce back and forth, which is either
therapeutic or annoying to me.

What are you working on now?

Chasing after my puppy and working on training her. Ha! Just kidding, though
sometimes I feel I do more of that than anything creative anymore. I knew going into
adopting her, writing would take a bit of a backburner for at least the next year. Really,
she is a great dog and I have gotten back to writing sooner than I thought I would be
able to do.
Right now, I am working on a book I am calling TED (once it is finished, I will hopfully
have a different title). TED focuses on three guys, each dealing with individual
struggles. One of the characters is written in first person; Turner is writing in a journal
about the events in his life after his counselor recommended it. I am writing the story in
layers, giving the readers an inside look to each character as the storyline unfolds. TED
also focuses on serious matters such as bullying and depression, and the effects it has
on not just one person, but other people's lives as well.

Excerpt:

When I woke up all I could smell was bacon and it smelled delicious. I was still naked so I jumped in the shower. I was finishing up when I heard Paisley walk in.
“Sweetheart breakfast is done.” I opened the shower door and shot him a smile as I got out. “Put on something nice beautiful, I have a day planned for us.” As he walked out I felt a huge smile go across my face, what could he have planned? I walked to my closet browsing through all my new things. I looked up on the shelf at the cute little cowboy hat I had got a few days ago when Harper and I went out. I grabbed my white knee length dress and brown belt with the big sliver buckle that said country girl. I thought about how I had gone from a total city girl to all out country, I loved it here. I put them on along with my cowboy hat, and boots. When I walked in the kitchen I'd swear I needed to pick his jaw up off the floor.
“Am I to assume this will work?” I asked with a smile.
“Damn babe you look gorgeous,” he said as he wrapped his arms around me. “I love you beautiful,” he said kissing my lips.
“I love you too sexy man,” I said with a wink. He had made a huge breakfast, bacon, eggs, pancakes and hash browns. I grabbed a tiny bit of everything so I didn't hurt his feelings and sat down to eat. We heard Harpers’ four-wheeler pull up. I greeted her at the door with a huge hug.
“Happy birthday hun!”
“Thank you sweets!” I noticed a heart shaped pendent hanging from her neck with beautiful green stones.
“Well what is that?” She smiled as she put her fingers up to touch it.
“It's my gift from Ryder. Isn’t it beautiful? The stones are my birthstone I love it!” She said with a huge smile.
“Nice job Ryder,” I gave him a grin as he walked out the door.
“Well sweets we have to head out we’re running a bit behind already. He's loading up the car now so we can get going. I walked over and gave Harper a huge hug.
“Have a blast hun and bring me back something pretty.” She gave me a smile.
“Of course.” She gave Paisley a hug right before he shook Ryder's hand and they laughed about something. As they drove off Paisley ran up behind me scooped me up and headed to the house.
“A whole week just me and you, it's going to start now. Well after I clean up breakfast,” he laughed.
“Well I will go up and do my makeup, you enjoy loading that dish washer. I winked and took off upstairs.
The first thing Paisley took me to do was Graceland. I couldn't believe it, it was amazing! Then we went to do some shopping. He picked out some super sexy lingerie for me which I’m sure was his plan all along, but sometimes I think he secretly enjoys shopping as much as I do. We went to eat at Morton's Steakhouse. It was delicious, had to be the best meal I've had in forever. As we drove towards our next destination he put his hand in mine, looked over and gave me a huge smile.
“Have you ever seen a country concert?” I nearly jumped out of my seat.
“NO! Why are we going to one? Who is it?” He laughed leaned over and gave me a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Luke Bryan”
“No freaking way!” I shouted nearly leaving the seat again.
“Yes way. Only one rule though.” I raised my eyebrow and tilted my head a bit. “You gotta shake it for me country girl.” We both laughed.
“Of course I will”
When we got home we took a shower together, and made love twice. I lay in bed with my head on his chest. “Paisley I could never thank you enough. You are so good to me sometimes, I question if I deserve it.” He raised my chin with his fingers.
“Babe you deserve the world. I love you.” I let out a huge smile
“I love you too baby,” and kissed him with all the passion I had in my body.

Review of The Trees Beyond the Grass by Robert Reeves with author guest post and giveaway**

Cole Mouzon exists to the outside world as a successful lawyer, loyal son and brother – all unaware of his private turmoil and the mental wall that holds him together. But, during a visit back home to Charleston, he receives a call from the FBI that a stranger has been found poisoned and mutilated. What Cole learns next threatens to bring down the wall and expose him to the sharp emotions behind it when he is told that there is more to his childhood nightmares than just dark places. Betrayed by his memory, the clue to his past and his ultimate survival rests in a stranger, Cash Calhoun, a man he has never met but has been tied to his entire life. Together, they embark on a hunt to find the truth held in the dark shadows of Cole’s mind and the marshy landscape of the Holy City before a hunter from Cole’s past destroys their newly discovered bond and their lives.

Steeped in southern drawl and suspense, THE TREES BEYOND THE GRASS, the first in the Cole Mouzon thriller series, is a riveting story about the amazing, but sometimes destructive, power of our minds to protect us from the evils of life, while undermining our ability to discover true happiness.

Book Links / goodreads / amazon / B&N

This story is deeply rooted in the south with backdrops from Denver to Atlanta to South Carolina. Mystery, intrigue and suspense will grab you from the start and hold your attention throughout as you travel with Cole from his home in Denver to where he grew up in Charleston. The bits and pieces of scenery and history in this book all but become a secondary character, they are so detailed and precise.

Cole Mouzon is an accomplished attorney in Denver who is headed back home to visit his family and childhood friend, Ann. He is completely unaware that a serial killer has him in her sights until his sister calls him frantic after an FBI agent contacts her trying to find Cole. This only adds to his recent stress brought on by a resurgence of a recurring nightmare he thought was long since gone. As the story progresses the reader is slowly given more details about Cole’s past that even he wasn’t aware of, and his connection to the killer that stalks him.

Poinsett is sick, twisted and demented. She will stop at nothing to make the people she believes responsible for ruining her life pay, with theirs. Her murderous rampage spans over several years and state lines with meticulous preparation, always followed with the painful delivery. Her depravity knows no bounds, and Reeves description of what’s going on in this woman’s mind while she’s stalking Cole sent chills down my spine. I’m very much reminded of Charlize Theron in Monster.

This book was emotional and intense. Strong secondary characters like Cole’s sister the cop and the alcoholic FBI agent who is still grieving over the death of his wife round out this suspenseful story. I especially liked Cash Calhoun. The professor that Cole shares a past with that neither of them even realized they shared. A past that will shape and mold the possibility of a future, if they make it out of the marsh alive.

The story leaned toward the over descriptive a couple of times, but it was always gripping, I was always intrigued, so the latter was easily overlooked. I wanted something more to develop in this installment with Cole and Cash, but that budding romance is definitely there, biding its time. I cannot wait until the next book in this series.

No naughty bits this time around. Cole and Cash are positively gay and attracted to one another, but they don’t have any adult time yet. The ending hints toward Reeves exploring their relationship further with the next book, and I’m excited to see where he takes them. Anyone that likes murder mysteries and suspense stories will want to read this book.

Born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, I currently live in Denver where I practice law. Life in the Rockies provides ample road trips, fly-fishing excursions, and other adventures usually shared with my weim-lab, Cooper.

I went to school at Vermont for law school and spent a year in Washington, D.C. before ultimately landing in Atlanta. After ten great years there, I decided on "a life with a view" in Colorado.

Away from the courtroom or the pen, I can usually be found traveling rustic foreign locations (Africa, Amazon, Australia), camping/hiking, cooking or just enjoying a new book find with a drink.

Guest Post with author Robert Reeves. Behind the scenes of 'The Trees Beyond the Grass'
Fact ~versus~ Fiction.........

Whether you have already read “The Trees Beyond the Grass”, or “The Trees” as I call it, or are considering it, you are probably like me and want to know whether the story being told has any basis in fact.  Well, The Trees has a lot of fact to it; I would say sixty-percent of the book is real.

Central to the plot of “The Trees” is a nightmare that hunts the main character, Cole Mouzon.  That dream is real, having hunted me as a child growing up in a suburb of Charleston, SC.  Having an overactive imagination, I started making a story around the dream before it disappeared and continued.  I continued to develop the story since then.  By college, I titled the dream/story,  “The Trees Beyond the Grass.”  When I began writing the book, a lot of the plot changed to be more realistic, but the basic theme is still there.

So what is fact and what is fiction in the story?  Well, all the locations, even those just slightly mentioned are real.  You will read about locations called “the Moon,” “Ten Mile,” and others which are local spots that existed at the time I was growing-up in Mt. Pleasant, SC, a suburb of Charleston.  Many have disappeared as Charleston has become ever more popular and the area has been developed.  Similarly, all the facts and history are real.  As you will see, I enjoy books where you learn while you are entertained.  So, I tend to write that way.  You’ll hear about Blackbeard the Pirate, the impacts of slavery, and local serial killers.

As for the characters, most are all fiction, with strong roots in people in my life.  The truest to fact character is MeMe, who is based on my childhood babysitter, NaNa.  The person described and where she lived is all true.  There is also an Ann and Granny in my life.  The other characters are formed from certain characteristics of friends and family meshed together to form interesting supporting characters.

If you have read the book already, or by the time you finish it, you will likely ask, “But, what about Cole and Cash?”  Well, Cash is totally fictional, derived from fantasy and some great experiences equally.  As for Cole, he is eighty percent me, twenty percent fiction.  His emotional stability, his pain is something I have felt in my life but certainly don’t feel today.  So, it was natural to use those sharp emotions to create an interesting character.  The remainder, his mannerisms, day-to-day life, desires, and the way his mind works information are all real.  Oh, and Mouzon is a family, too.

Of course, what is total fiction is the serial killer aspect of the story.  I am not being hunted by a killer, yet.  The knowledge and understanding of a killer’s workings and the FBI were developed either from my time as a criminal defense attorney representing those accused of murder, or from research.  The juicy parts are mostly real.  I’ve seen ample dead bodies and had to litigate the science around solving a murder.

This mixing of fact and fiction will continue in “When Aspens Quake,” the second book in the series due out in March/April of next year.  But, the story will shift location to Denver and Atlanta – both places I have lived.  So expect a lot of treatment of real local facts and characters as was done in “The Trees.”  In all, I hope you enjoy the books and characters as much as I enjoy writing them.

A huge thanks to author Robert Reeves for taking time to visit with us today, and share some of the background for Trees! Until next time..........

Jennifer Shaw Wolf grew up on a farm in the tiny town of St. Anthony, Idaho. She spent cold Idaho mornings milking cows in the dark and attended a school where Hunter’s Education was part of the sixth grade curriculum. She’s always been a writer, whether it was sewing together books to read to her little brothers or starting an underground newspaper in sixth grade. She met the love of her life at Ricks College, (now BYU Idaho), after he dropped her on her head. She graduated from Ricks and then Brigham Young University, Provo with a degree in Broadcast Communications. Now she lives in beautiful, green, (rainy) Lacey, Washington with her husband and four kids. She loves to produce videos, ski, ride horses, and read, but really all she has time for is chasing kids and writing.

Excerpt from Dead Girls Don't Lie:
The image is small and grainy, but it's Rachel, sitting in her bedroom, alive. I stare at it a
minute before I hit okay. As she starts to talk, pin pricks of pain find something solid in the hole
in my chest.
All hope that Rachel is still alive drains with her first words.
“Jaycee, if you're watching this, it either means this whole thing ended as badly as I think
it will, or this is our twenty year class reunion and we're drinking champagne, eating expensive
chocolate and toasting the fact that we survived all of this and high school too.”
“If the second part is true, and I really hope that it is, I'm going to bet that by now that
Claire Rallstrom has six kids, three ex-husbands and weighs at least two-hundred pounds.
Taylor Brice married the richest guy she could find, divorced him, and now she has so much
plastic surgery that her face will crack if she smiles.” She laughs at her own joke, but her voice
sounds sad.
“But if the first part is true, and I'm gone, I need you to know how sorry I am. I shouldn't
have taken you to the house that night. His secret was mine to keep because I loved him, not
yours. I should have never let you get close enough to be involved, I was stupid and now it's too
late for either of us to go back.”
She pauses a second, swallows, and I hear fear in her voice when it starts up again. “I
guess I should have told you everything from the beginning, but I thought it was more important
for you to be safe than it was for us to be friends. I’m sorry for that. I probably would do the
same thing again, but I’ve missed you so much.” Her voice cracks.
My throat closes over with pain.
“I’m sorry to ask you to do this, but if I'm gone, you're the only one who can find out the
truth.”

Kinslayer blog tour Spotlight & Giveaway

A SHATTERED EMPIRE
The mad Shōgun Yoritomo has been assassinated by the Stormdancer Yukiko, and the threat of civil war looms over the Shima Imperium. The Lotus Guild conspires to renew the nation’s broken dynasty and crush the growing rebellion simultaneously – by endorsing a new Shōgun who desires nothing more than to see Yukiko dead.
A DARK LEGACY
Yukiko and the mighty thunder tiger Buruu have been cast in the role of heroes by the Kagé rebellion. But Yukiko herself is blinded by rage over her father’s death, and her ability to hear the thoughts of beasts is swelling beyond her power to control. Along with Buruu, Yukiko’s anchor is Kin, the rebel Guildsman who helped her escape from Yoritomo’s clutches. But Kin has his own secrets, and is haunted by visions of a future he’d rather die than see realized.
A GATHERING STORM
Kagé assassins lurk within the Shōgun’s palace, plotting to end the new dynasty before it begins. A waif from Kigen’s gutters begins a friendship that could undo the entire empire. A new enemy gathers its strength, readying to push the fracturing Shima imperium into a war it cannot hope to survive. And across raging oceans, amongst islands of black glass, Yukiko and Buruu will face foes no katana or talon can defeat.
The ghosts of a blood-stained past.

Except 2. From Chapter 3 “The First and Only Reason”

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR KIND. WITH ARASHITORA, THE FEMALE CHOOSES THE MATE WITH THE STRONGEST WINGS, THE SHARPEST CLAWS. THE MALE HAS NO CHOICE AT ALL. HE IS SIMPLY A SLAVE TO INSTINCT AND THE FEMALE’S SCENT.

Well, that sounds awful.

IT IS SIMPLE. YOU HUMANS. ALL THIS SIGHING AND SPITTLE SWAPPING. YOUR COUPLING IS COMPLICATED BEYOND ALL NEED OR REASON.

Gods, please don’t use that word . . .

MY OTHER OPTIONS ARE LESS POLITE.

Because you’re usually a paragon of courtly manners?
The thunder tiger harrumphed, swooped lower so his belly brushed the tree line. Gentle rain
began falling from the storm-washed skies.

TELL ME. THE MASHING OF YOUR FACES TOGETHER . . .

Kissing.

IT DEMONSTRATES AFFECTION.

Yes.

AND THE TONGUES?

. . . What?

HONESTLY, WHAT PURPOSE DOES THAT SERVE?

How under heaven did you . . .

SISTER, YOU WERE PROJECTING YOUR THOUGHTS OVER THE ENTIRE FOREST. IT WAS LIKE HIGH SPRING OUT THERE. A SWEATY TIDAL WAVE OF BARELY REPRESSED ADOLESCENT LUST DROWNING ALL BEFORE IT.

Gods, really?

THE MONKEYS IN PARTICULAR SEEMED . . . EXCITED.

She pressed her fists to her temples, glanced over her shoulder at Kin.

WELL, PERHAPS EXCITED IS THE WRONG WORD . . .

Yes, Buruu, I understand. Thank you.

TITILLATED?

Buruu . . .

ENGORGED, PERHAPS?

Oh my GODS, stop!
The treetops parted like water as they descended through the canopy, showers of severed
green tumbling earthward in their wake. Away from the glare of the garish day, Yukiko pulled her
goggles down around her throat, ran her hand across her eyes.

You could really hear what I was feeling?

LOUD AS THUNDER. AS IF I FELT IT MYSELF.

She chewed her lip, listening to the faint cacophony on the edge of her subconscious.
The Kenning has never been like this before, Buruu. Your thoughts are louder than I’ve ever
heard. If I listen, I can hear every animal for miles. All those impulses and lives stacked atop one another.

It’s deafening.

YOUR FATHER NEVER SPOKE TO YOU OF THIS?

He never even told me he had the gift. But, he drowned his Kenning in liquor and smoke. Maybe
this is why? Maybe as we get older, it gets louder? Or maybe breaking Yoritomo’s mind did something to break mine?

She sighed, ran her fingers through his feathers.

I don’t understand any of this, brother . . .
