 3.5 star Review...

When literature professor Anderson Williams arrives late to a father/son date to find his father dead, his world collapses around him. Now, not only is he mourning his father, but he’s scared for his life while trying to make sure his father’s face doesn’t become one of the thousands of cold cases in some dusty room. Then he meets NYPD officer, Leo Sung Kim, and he isn’t prepared for his body’s reaction to the cop.

Leo Sung Kim’s seen horrible things as a cop. But the latest serial killer is worse than anything he’s encountered. To make things worse, he’s instantly in lust with Anderson which makes staying professional almost impossible.

Even as Leo fights his emotions, the killer gets bolder. When the smoke clears, Leo could not only lose his heart but his life.

Anderson Williams life changes drastically overnight. He arrives for his weekly dinner date with his father and finds him dead, and then Anderson's home as well is broken into and trashed. In the middle of all the madness, he meets the detective in charge of finding his father's killer, Leo Sung Kim. As fate would have it these two men have a few things in common. They are both gay and they both loved Jazmon Williams as a father.

When Leo was a teenager he was headed down the wrong path, until Jazmon helped him get right and became a father figure to the then troubled teen. Now he's a successful detective trying to solve the murder of the man that gave him a second chance in life. At first Leo and his partner Daniel, as well as most people involved in the case, believe the killer has targeted the Williams family. But when they find another body and it's someone from Leo's past, not the Williams, they figure out the killer is trying to get Leo's attention.

In the middle of all the insanity, Leo and Anderson succumb to their mutual attraction which is not without it's ups and downs either. The stress of the case and Leo fearing for Anderson's safety bleeds over into their personal relationship and causes a rift between them. Just enough of a rift to put Anderson in the killer's path. Now Leo has to uncover exactly who the killer is and get Anderson back before he becomes the next victim.

As the relationship between Leo and Anderson had it's ups and downs, so did the book. I figured out very early on who the killer was and why he was doing it, so when that aspect of the story was unveiled, I wasn't surprised as I would have liked to have been. And Leo didn't really do any detective work on the case so much, he read more like a body guard, hell bent on protecting those he loved. The relationships in the story though, between lovers and families and friends, those were well thought out and written. I loved how Anderson and Leo just fit well together and each of them had a friend they could talk to and those secondary characters added to the storyline progression as well, they weren't just fluff.

Overall the story kept me engaged throughout, to spite I could see certain things coming a mile away. Duchene writes some of the best reality based stories with flawed characters and in depth storylines. I really enjoyed her attention to the littlest details in this story that surrounded the mystery, the killer's machinations and the character development along the way. So, while there were a few speed bumps along the way, overall I really enjoyed the rid with Leo and Anderson.

I think fans of Duchene's work will love this book regardless, it has her fingerprints all over it. Readers that like thrillers, hard fought for happy ever afters and opposites attract will like this book as well.
