Praise for THE CLEARING

“Downright creepy. Tom Deady brings the scares in this gripping novel of horror and courage.” —Jonathan Maberry, New York Times best-selling author

“Tom Deady excels in creating a history and mystery that is engaging and action-packed. The Clearing's strong protagonists and their realistic concerns, beliefs, and choices creates a memorable and thoroughly engrossing read that is difficult to put down and impossible to predict—just the ticket for a superior horror novel and should ideally reach into adult reader circles, as well as mature teens.” —Midwest Book Review

“Deady shows an ability to switch from adult to young adult horror with the ease and confidence of a true wordsmith. The Clearing is a fast-paced supernatural tale, intelligent and sparkling with great characters, and more than a few chills. Superb.” —Dave Jeffery, author of Beatrice Beecham’s Cryptic Crypt and Ship of Shadows

When Hannah Green’s dog comes out of the woods carrying a sneaker that contains a partially decomposed foot, she thinks it’s the worst thing that could ever happen to her.

She is wrong.

Hannah and her best friend, Ashley, decide to play detective but find themselves in the middle of a decades-old mystery.

What is the strange old woman Mama Bayole hiding in her decrepit farmhouse? Why is the local librarian so determined to prevent them from researching town history? Who is following them around Hopedale, New Hampshire?

The girls make a shocking discovery about what has been happening in the woods behind Hannah's house. As they get closer to the truth, things take a dangerous turn, and they play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse that may end up costing them their lives.

Excerpt from The Clearing

Hannah walked slowly along the trail, keeping an eye on Scout. She anticipated a lecture from Dad when she got home—I told you to keep him on the leash, Hannah—and was in no hurry to get there. She crested a rocky rise and sat on a large boulder. It was a favorite vantage point of hers, with just enough breaks in the trees to offer a beautiful view of the woods. Autumn isn’t that far off, she thought, catching hints of yellow on some of the leaves in the distance. She pulled out her cell phone and glared at the two words at the top of the screen:

NO SIGNAL.

“Life in the sticks,” she mumbled, and stood. She would have to wait until she got home to call Ashley and make plans for later. “Let’s go, Scout.”

She kicked small stones as she walked, enjoying the day but wishing it didn’t feel so fall-like already.

Something crashed through the bushes to her left.

“Scout, get back here!” Why didn’t I put the leash on him? She pushed through the scrub pines, intent on catching Scout before he found something else gross to roll around on. She heard his tags off to her right and spotted a flash of tan fur. Then he was gone.

She slowed her pace and followed.

“Scout, come on, boy!”

The shadows deepened as she moved farther into the trees. Above her, the branches joined, conspiring to keep the sunlight from reaching her. She stopped to listen, unnerved by the quiet. The cicadas and early crickets had gone silent. Her own harsh breathing and the occasional sibilant whisper of the breeze through the trees were the only sounds she heard.

“Scout?” she called, softer, not wanting anyone else to hear.

A distant jingle caused her to let out the breath she didn’t know she was holding. She moved toward the sound, careful not to make a noise, cocking her head for another warning that Scout was near. She stopped again, listening. A different sound reached her, not Scout’s collar but a rustling. No, that wasn’t right—it was more frenzied somehow. Then the dog tags were all she heard, growing louder.

“Good boy, Scout,” she called, a relieved smile on her face.

Scout darted out of the trees with something hanging from his mouth. Hannah shuddered, thinking it was some poor animal. When he bounded closer, she laughed. It was just an old, pink Converse high-top. “Good boy, Scout, you didn’t kill anything today.”

Scout dropped his prize at her feet and sat on his haunches, looking up at her.

“Sorry, boy, I didn’t bring treats.” She bent to pick up the tattered sneaker and leaped backward with a squeal. She swallowed hard, her throat gone dry, and leaned in closer to the sneaker. “Oh, God …”

Scout’s ears dropped, and he whimpered. Hannah bit her lip and crouched next to the shoe. Using a nearby stick, she pushed away legions of squirming maggots. The color washed out of the day. The normal sounds of the forest became oddly threatening. Then the smell hit her, and she gagged, falling backward onto her butt. She rolled to the side and threw up, spewing her breakfast onto the mossy ground. Scout barked frantically. Hannah stared at the pool of puke, watching it run down the slope. A string of saliva connected it to her mouth, and she reached up to wipe it away. The slimy texture reminded her of the maggots, and she dry-heaved until her head ached. Closing her eyes didn’t help; all she saw were wriggling white things. Scrambling to her hands and knees, careful to avoid her recycled breakfast, she tried to stand. The ground tilted and she closed her eyes again, ignoring the sickly pallid shapes that moved there. Would she ever not see them? Using a low-hanging branch for balance, she tested her legs to make sure they’d hold her before letting go.

“Where did you find this, Scout?” Hannah’s voice came out gravelly, her throat sore from vomiting. She stared off into the shadows of the trees where Scout had come from, remembering the frantic noises she’d heard before he’d reappeared.

Digging.

She looked around as if someone might be watching, or even sneaking up on her. She shook off the thoughts and decided it was the old sneaker freaking her out.

Well, not the sneaker itself, but the partially decomposed foot sticking out of it.

This is Book two of the Half Moon Bay series and does need read in order. In Book 1, Hope wins a resort and moves from Chicago to the tropics to change her life and start anew. She makes lots of friends and finds a sexy new boyfriend. In this book Hope and Alex face challenges in their romantic relationship as well in their personal lives. Then there are also challenges running the resort when a hurricane hits.

This book has some great twists, lots of action and a sweet, clean romance and I’m looking forward to the next book.

Erin Brockus writes romantic adventures set in exotic, tropical locales, including the Half Moon Bay series.

She was introduced to scuba diving in 1998 by her husband. They have since traveled worldwide enjoying scuba diving, and the exotic locales they have visited form many of the ideas for her characters and stories. She has even been known to don a drysuit and explore the cold, murky waters of the Pacific Northwest.

Born in 1969 in Washington state, Erin had a love of creative writing as a youngster, but the expectations of Real Life got in the way and she went to college to become a pharmacist. After practicing pharmacy for over 25 years, she reduced her hours as a practicing pharmacist to devote more time to writing.

Erin is also an avid runner and cyclist, and lives with her husband, a scuba instructor, in eastern Washington state. Finding Hope is her first novel.

This is book three of the series. It can be read alone but you would enjoy it more if you read them all. This way you know who the other characters are.

Roy has lots of secrets. He showed up looking for work after running from home. Ky hires him even though he has no experience. Brad takes Roy under wing and sees things in Roy. They become friends and more.

This is such a sweet story. I loved both Brad and Roy and getting glimpses of Ky and Brodie again. The romance is sweet, the sex off page and pretty slow burn. It’s an all over feel good story. There is a touch of Suspense when Roy faces his secrets. I just wish that part had been drug out a little more. It felt slightly rushed. Having said that… the story was really good and easy to read. I read it in an evening.

Cat's Review of Strong Wine (Sword Dance book 3) by A.J. Demas @ajdemaswriter @TTCBooksandmore

Retired soldier Damiskos and his lover Varazda have been living together in Boukos for a month, and their future is beginning to look bright. Then Damiskos receives a letter summoning him home to Pheme—where his parents are deeply in debt, his brother is being hunted by loan sharks, and an unwanted arranged marriage looms.

And that’s before Damiskos is charged with murder.

Fortunately, he’s not alone. Old friends are back in Pheme. And Varazda—eunuch, sword-dancer, and spy—has solved mysteries before. But saving his lover from execution and from marriage will take time, and with only days until Dami’s trial, time is running out.

Strong Wine is the third book in the Sword Dance trilogy, the conclusion of Dami and Varazda’s story from Sword Dance and Saffron Alley. This time with fake fortunetellers, real courtroom drama, and … fertilizer?

Cat gives this 15, whooops, I mean 5 Meows...
This is book three of a series and you do need to read in order but it’s so worth it!

In this book Dami and Varazda have been living together for a month. Dami was supposed to stay for a week on a trial basis, but hadn’t left and isn’t sure if Varazda really wants him to stay. Varazda isn’t sure how to ask Dami to stay and he does have a family to think of as well.  Then Dami’s family contacts him to come home so Dami decided this is good as any to close out his apartment and collect his horse. His parents have a surprise waiting for him that throws a monkey wrench in his plans. After a week of no word, Varazda goes to see what’s going on to find Dami under house arrest on murder charges.

Oh my was this good! There were so many twists and I just love Varazda and Dami. The characters are unique the story engaging and I the romance swoon worthy, plus there is the murder mystery. So much to enjoy about this book and the series and I just want more. Maybe Damaskas’s brother will get a story? One can hope!

If Knox were to discover this, he would know hurting her would be the key to destroying Zayne. Torn between his desire to claim Amelie as his own and his ferocious passion to protect her, can Zayne find a way to bring down his malicious enemy? Or will an age old vendetta rob him of a blissful future with his bonded mate?

Cat gives this 4 Meows with 3 purr heat index...

This is a book 6 but it stands alone fine. This story is about Zane and Amelie. There lots of recurring characters but enough information that you don’t feel lost. Also things had happened in the past to both characters but you get some of that as well. I guess that was my only issue since there is a lot of backstory and explanation it seemed to take a portion of the book.
Having said that, once the story got started it was really good. I enjoyed the romance and plots of the book, and there is plenty of action as well. If you like shifters, Fae, opposites attract, true mates and suspense, you will like this book.

I watch Colin and Zayne on the back porch, and it’s hard not to notice how handsome Zayne is. He’s over a hundred and fifty years older than me, but he doesn’t look a day over thirty. His beard is short and well-kept, maybe even slightly rugged. He’s not your typical wolf. But, I’m not going to lie, he fascinates me.

Colin walks in through the back door, and I turn away to make it look like I wasn’t staring. I figured Zayne would follow him, but when the door doesn’t open again, I peer over my shoulder to see him still on the deck, his attention turned to the mountains.

“Is he coming in?” Kami asks Colin.

“Oh, yeah,” Colin answers. “He said he just needs a minute.”

Colin busies himself with helping Kami, but I can’t take my eyes away from Zayne. An idea pops into my head, and I smile. Moving over to the wine, I fill up my glass and turn for the door.

“Where are you going?” Kami asks.

I wink at her over my shoulder. “You say people love talking to me, so I’m going to see if it’s true.”

Her eyes widen. “You’re going out there?”

Both her and Colin stare at me as if I’m about to walk into the lion’s den. But, then again, that doesn’t scare me. Nothing does anymore. Zayne’s just a wolf who doesn’t like to socialize with people. Unfortunately for him, I’m not going to give him a choice.

“Hopefully, he doesn’t leave me hanging,” I say, backing up out of the room.

Their mouths gape, but they don’t try to stop me. When I get to the door, I take a deep breath and walk outside. Zayne tenses when I step onto the deck, but he doesn’t acknowledge me. I move closer, but there’s about three feet of distance between us. Bringing the wine to my lips, I slowly sip some down, wondering if he’ll speak to me first. Of course, he doesn’t, but that doesn’t shock me.

Turning my body toward him, I smile and wait for him to look at me. “I’m Amelie. I don’t think we’ve been formally introduced. I’m a good friend of Laila’s.”

Being around royals is always interesting. Zayne slowly turns his head my way, and it’s the first time I’ve noticed how blue his eyes are. I can feel his power more so than any other wolf I’ve been around. He’s strong.

“I know who you are,” he says, his voice low in that sexy sort of way. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
