Sometimes one moment defines a man

For homicide detective Mac, it's been a good year. Having Tony to go home to makes him a better cop and a better person. For Tony, it's been hard being in love with a man he can't touch in public. Evasions and outright lying to friends and family take a little of the shine off his relationship with Mac, but Tony is determined to make it work.

As the Minneapolis Police Department moves into a hot, humid summer, Mac is faced with a different challenge. A killer has murdered two blond women, and the police have no real clues. Mac hates to think that another murder may be the only way they'll make progress with the case. But when that murder happens, it hits close to home for Tony. And suddenly Mac faces an ultimatum: come out into the sunlight and stand beside Tony as his lover, or walk away and live without a piece of his heart.

Cat gives this book 5 Meows with a 3 purr heat index...

This is book 2 in the Life Lessons series. I haven’t t read the first so you can read out of order, however, it did feel like I was missing out on something. Perhaps how Mac and Tony got together though there was a bit of a hint of backstory I followed along okay. The characters are amazing. Tony is the loveable sweetheart and Mac the brooding bad boy that grows on you.

The side story was suspenseful, and the main story of Mac and Tony’s relationship was so realistic. I even agonized with Mac though I wanted to smack him several times.

Ben and Anna are cute kid characters that breathed an air of even more realism to the book and added that touch of cuteness to soften up a hard mystery.

Warning: there is some violence and also talk of possible rape so if there is trigger warnings then this may not be for you, none is on page.

Mac's three goals: keep Tony safe, catch the killer, don't come out.

Tony Hart's a dedicated teacher, though he's not much older than his high-school students. Between his profession, a few good friends, and plenty of books, he's content with his quiet life. Then the murdered body of another teacher falls into the elevator at his feet, and Tony's life becomes all too exciting.

Jared MacLean is a homicide detective, widowed father to a young daughter, and deeply in the closet. But from the moment he meets Tony's blue eyes in that high school hallway, Mac can't help wanting this man in his life. Mac's not out ― can't afford to be out ― but Tony makes him want the impossible.

Mac isn't the only one with their eyes on Tony, though. As the murderer tries to cover their tracks, Mac has to work fast or lose Tony, permanently.

(This is a rerelease of the 2011 original with light editing.)

Cat gives this book 5 Meows with 3 purr heat index...

Tony is out of a break up so he works late a lot. One night he is carrying down books in the elevator when a teacher stumbles in crashing into him. He yells at him then realizes as the man falls that he’s been stabbed. He hears footsteps but doesn’t see anyone so goes to his room to call for help. At first when the cops show they seem to act like he is a suspect.

Mac is tired when called to the school. At first it seems likely the man there is the killer but why would he have called the cops and not just left? It just didn’t add up, and the more he talked to him the more he liked him but knew he had to keep his distance to keep a secret he has kept all his life.

I love this author so this book was a no brainer for me. Mystery and suspense tick boxes as well. Big, burly, grumpy police detective….tick.  Sweet, sexy, teacher…tick. Cute kids …tick.  Did I mention the cop so deep in the closet hid breath probably smelled like mothballs?…tick, tick, tick!

I loved all the characters, the romance is so, so yummy and the suspense nail biting. I didn’t guess the killer until it pretty much was a given. If you like a hot mystery suspense, closeted cops, grumpy/sunshine, cute kids, and a sexy romance you will love this. And then get the audio of book two!

I get asked about my name a lot. It's not something exotic, though. “Kaje” is pronounced just like “cage” – it’s an old nickname, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I’ve been writing far longer than I care to admit (*whispers – forty-five years*), although mostly for my own entertainment. I write M/M romance, often with added mystery, fantasy, historical, SciFi, paranormal… I also have Young Adult short stories (some released under the pen name Kira Harp.)

After decades of writing just for fun, my husband convinced me I really should submit something, somewhere. My first professionally published book, Life Lessons, came out in May 2011. I now have a good-sized backlist in ebooks and print, both free and professionally published, including Amazon bestseller The Rebuilding Year and Rainbow Award Best Mystery-Thriller Tracefinder: Contact.
