Taming the Wyld (A States of Love story) by @Lucie_Archer blog tour | Tam's Release day Review, Exclusive Excerpt & #giveaway #mmromance @Dreamspinners @TTCBooksandmore

Taming the Wyld
A States of Love story
from Dreamspinner Press

The Witness Protection Program dumps JD Smith practically at the ends of the earth—in Two Pines, Alaska—to protect him until he can testify against a dangerous gang. He tries to stick to his story and keep his head down, but it’s impossible to ignore bush pilot Jake Wylder, a sexy loner with quite a reputation around the small town.

Flying medical supplies around Alaska suits Jake’s wild streak and love of freedom. He’s perfectly content to keep his romantic encounters casual—at least until he meets JD. Something about the nurse makes Jake think settling down might not be such a hardship. Now he just needs to convince JD he’s serious—which won’t be easy, given his past.

For a relationship to stand a chance, JD must testify so he can return to Two Pines as the man he really is—and Jake must grow into the man JD needs him to be.

Jake Wylder is a love 'em then leave 'em kinda guy, and he's not particular when it comes to gender either. Male - Female, it's all the same when you're horizontal. He's quite successful in business as well, doing what he loves, flying, and helping people at the same time. It's the selfless act of helping and not expecting anything in return that he and new-comer, JD Smith, have in common. From the start, Wylder is enamored with JD, determined to add another notch to his bedpost. What's odd is that Wylder wants more than just his obligatory one night with JD.

Short, sexy and steamy... my three favorite colors! What a delicious little read this was. I thoroughly enjoyed the game of cat and mouse, and the complete role reversal that took place in this story. The perpetual bachelor gets a taste of his own medicine when his attempts at getting JD into his bed are continually rebuffed. But it's not just Wylder's reputation that has JD pulling the brakes. The sexy nurse has his own baggage and, unlike Wylder's, JD's secret could get them both killed.

Just a well written story with these characters that pull you in, make you relate and cheer for them to make it work in the end. There is a healthy dose of passion and determination, a bit of romance, intrigue and suspense, and just a dash of angst. Definitely a must read novella. I give this one 5 stars... but that's just my two cents.

Release day excerpt:

Hello everyone! I thought I’d offer up another exciting excerpt in honor of release day today! As you might have noticed from the blurb and cover art, planes and flying are big parts of the story thanks to Jake’s profession as a pilot. Unfortunately for JD, he has aviophobia, or a fear of flying.

To set the scene, this is JD’s first time flying with Jake as they make their way out to the Steese Natural Conservation Area to rescue an injured hiker. Enjoy!

*****

The bottom dropped right out of JD’s stomach when the plane took off. He’d suffered through a two-hour bus ride and another three hours in a car on roads—some of which had no business calling themselves such—just to avoid traveling to Two Pines by air. The flight to Anchorage from California was bad enough, but at least he had some Ativan for that.

Now he was whizzing through the clouds in a tiny metal coffin hundreds of feet above the earth.

There might not’ve been any clouds. It was impossible to tell with his eyes wired shut.

“Just breathe,” Jake said from beside him, but his lungs felt like they were full of sand, gritty and abrasive and coating his throat. “It’s really not that bad. I’m an excellent pilot. I’ve been doing this my whole life.”

“Not. Helping,” he bit out with a ragged breath.

“Okay, well what does help is to think about something else, so… what, uh, do you do for fun?”

“I try not to die in fiery plane crashes. That’s pretty high up there.”

Jake chuckled. “We have that in common. And it’s a good sign you can still crack jokes.”

“It really wasn’t a joke.”

“Okay, how about I go first? I like to fly, but I guess that goes without saying and really doesn’t help in this situation, soooo… uh, I like to fish. That’s pretty common up here. Hmm, oh, I also love to go camping. Steese, the nature reserve we’re going to, is nice for that sort of thing. Do you like the outdoors?”

“Only fishing I’ve ever done was on a Wii.”

“I could take you sometime.”

The lift to Jake’s voice had his eyes shooting open and his head whipping around. Jake was looking at him with a small yet hopeful smile on his soft pink lips that stood out against the dark hair encircling them. It was ridiculous really, how handsome he was. But he was pretty sure Jake was supposed to keep his eyes on the… well, maybe not the road, but that wasn’t the point.

JD turned away, screwing his eyes shut once more. “Pass.”

Jake was probably a nice guy with all that charm and wit, but he was not going to be swindled by a cute smile and puppy dog eyes. Unlike Jake—who rumor had it was only interested in a quick lay—JD had other things on his mind. First of all was not dying, and that extended to the gang he was hiding from just as much as it did to the flying deathtrap they were in. Relationships and WITSEC didn’t go together very well from what he’d heard.

The second thing was family. He didn’t have one, but it was something he desperately wanted. His parents had died within eight months of each other when he was nineteen, which had left him on his own, his mother in a car accident and his father of what he could only describe as a broken heart. He wanted what they had, what he remembered they had, and he knew sleeping around wasn’t the way to go about achieving that.

His parents fought like everyone else, but they loved each other deeply. That’s what he was looking for, that kind of connection, one that couldn’t be made but just was. Though he wasn’t fool enough to think he’d find it in the frozen desert he found himself in, nor in a playboy with charcoal curls and big doe eyes, no matter how nice the accompanying smile was. He wasn’t fool enough to think he’d ever find it, but settling just wasn’t an option.

The plane shook, and he squeezed the arm he hadn’t realized he was clinging to tighter in his vise grip. “Oh shit!”

“Just a little air pocket, we’re fine,” said Jake, his soothing tone almost as annoying as his arrogant one.

It took twenty minutes before JD could stand to keep his eyes open for longer than a few seconds at a time, and ten more beyond that before he released his death grip on his trusty pilot. He was going to be so glad when they touched down and he was no longer hurtling through the air at a hundred and fifty knots—however fast that was—with some guy who smelled like outdoors and man.

Lucie Archer is a student of the universe who is obsessed with the stars, in love with beaches, and crazy about dudes falling in love. She tells stories of romance, love, and life, with a little bit of passion thrown in for good measure. Because what’s life without a little pop and sizzle?

When she’s not writing, she can be found tending to her garden, playing with her four-legged children, or procrastinating. Although, she spends a lot of time fending off random plot bunnies that threaten to derail her WIP’s.
