Cat gives this one 3 meows with 3 purr heat index...

The Heartache of Life is book 6 in the Working Girls Series but it stands alone just fine. Gemma was happy, seventeen years old with the world to look forward to when in a matter of hours her life was turned upside down. Her father and uncle both died in a plane crash, the evil worker of her dads company takes it over, locked her out of her house with just a suitcase and no money and she finds herself on the streets. After a bad few weeks, losing a friend that was her only help, a woman takes her in and is kind then drops the bomb that she owes her and she expects her to marry a special man or work for her as a prostitute so she goes with the man. He is kind, puts her in college, lets her work in his business and all is great. Until she meets Taylor a new lawyer for their company and Robert shows his true colors.

I thought the actual story in this book is really good. All Gemma goes through is heartbreaking and angsty and you wonder how she manages.  There is a lot going on in the story, more ups and downs than I mentioned. I liked that the story was true to life... crap happens to the best of us...but I will say, I really had to suspend my believability because I had a couple of little issues. First, at the beginning how did this worker just take over when there was a will? I know Gemma was only 17, but usually someone is provided to take care of the trust and Gemma until she was 18 or even 21. Then after the next big hurdle, she went through leaving her wealthy, she moves into a house share with two other girls and works as a stripper. I am sure this was to bring in the series Working Girls and also introduce us to a few of them, but I felt it was a bit much, like a second story in this one. Maybe she could have met the girls somewhere and become friends? Don't get me wrong, I actually loved these girls and the friendship, the stripping just didn't fit for me.

So all in all it is a good story with a lot going on. It does show that life is not easy and heartache can make us stronger. I cried a time or two for poor Gemma. I even began to like Taylor, the love interest, by the end of the book. So if you like angsty stories, trials of life, friends, and a very good happy ever after... this is for you.

KL Humphreys lives in Ireland with the love of her life and her baby girl. In a way, the world has him to thank for her debut novel, Deadly Hunt. After years of thinking about writing the story that had been dying to get out of her head, she finally confided in her other half. He gave her all the encouragement she needed to get the story out, he has been with her every step of the way.
KL loves music, especially pop, R'n'B and rap and if she's writing you will find it playing somewhere nearby. She also loves all romance novels but of course, Romantic Suspense is her go-to genre. When she isn't writing it...it's a good bet she is curled up somewhere reading it.
