Sara Jane Rispoli is still searching for her missing family, but instead of fighting off a turncoat uncle and crooked cops, this time she finds herself on the run from creepy beings with red, pulsing eyes and pale white skin chasing her through the streets in ice cream trucks; they can only be described as Ice Cream Creatures. They’re terrifying and hell bent on killing her, but they’re also a link to her family, a clue to where they might be and who has them.
While she battles these new pursuers, she’s also discovering more about her own cold fury and more about the Chicago Outfit, how the past misdeeds–old murders and vendettas–might just be connected to her present and the disappearance of her family. But connecting the dots is tough and time-consuming and may finally be the undoing of her relationship with the handsome Max–who’s now her boyfriend. But for his own safety, Sara Jane may have to end this relationship before it even really starts.
Her pursuers who’ve shown her her mother’s amputated finger and the head of the Chicago Outfit who’s just whistled her in for a sit-down make a romance unthinkable. The only thing that matters is finding her family and keeping everyone she loves alive.
His debut young adult novel, COLD FURY, will be published by Penguin/Putnam in 2012 and is the first in a trilogy; he’s currently working on the second book. He lives in Chicago with his wife, Laura, and two young children.
Top 10 Favorite Things with T.M.
Favorite author (dead or alive)
Can I offer two? Dead – Raymond Chandler. Alive – Elmore Leonard. They are my demigods.
Favorite Chocolates
Perugia dark chocolate, the darker the better, almost so bitter your face scrunches up with each
bite. Yum.
Favorite books that inspired you to write
Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, for its perfect portrayal of a young adult mind in crisis. Out
of Sight, by Elmore Leonard, for its perfect portrayal of characters who are good and bad at the
same time. The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler, for demonstrating that characters are just as
important as plot, and sometimes more so.
Favorite songs to listen to while writing
The list is way too long, but I vary between Top 40, hip-hop, jazz, and classical. It really depends
on what I’m writing, and my mood.
Favorite destination to live
I love my hometown, Chicago, for innumerable reasons, but if someone put a gun to my head,
I’d pack up and head to Venice (Italy, not California.)
Musicians/bands/groups
See ‘favorite songs’ above. Too, too many…I’m so into music that listing favorites seems like
I’m cheating on others…
Favorite movies of all time
I can always watch The Godfather, I and II, and The Shawshank Redemption. I also love The
Third Man, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Catch Me If You Can. They all share the common
theme of someone trying to escape (sometimes successfully, sometimes not) from circumstances
that have been forced upon them.
Favorite TV program/series
I love 60 Minutes, Girls, Mad Men, and that one about vampires. Wait…they’re all about
vampires!
Favorite movie moments
The empty cell in The Shawshank Redemption; the fateful punch in Back to the Future; Michael
Corleone dropping the gun after shooting the crooked cop in The Godfather…seriously, I could
go on forever.
Favorite Super Villain
Count Dracula. The vampire culture has sort of shredded the original story by Bram Stoker.
Dracula was the OV (original vampire,) and he was a soulless, heartless supernatural killer with
no redeeming qualities. The end of the book, chasing him through frozen tundra, is beyond
classic. I get chills thinking about it.
Favorite gadgets
Besides all of the digital goodies I uses on a daily basis, my current favorite is old school – and
extendable police baton. It’s wicked.
Favorite dream destinations
I have one, and it’s vague. I’d like to go to a secluded white sand beach somewhere on a jadecolored ocean with my wife and two little kids, and just hang out for as long as we’d like until
getting bored. Which would be never.
