Laney Walker is a quick witted, athletic, southern tomboy who lets few get too close, using her sarcastic zingers to deflect. She also has no idea how others view her, Evan having protected and coveted her since they were children. But college puts a gap between Laney and Evan that neither of them were prepared for- old relationships are tested, new ones are formed and nothing will ever be the same.
Especially when in walks one Dane Kendrick, not at all the familiar, southern charmer of home, but an animal all his own.
A story of growing up, friendship, loyalty, first love, primal love...and life.
Warning: Mature content.
"Baby" I say as I drop a kiss on her forehead "You can plan out dates, tell me what to wear, run the radio" I wink "You can even name our kids one day...after Disney characters even. But in the bedroom, the hot tub, against the wall, or basically anywhere I have you naked and wet...let me lead."
Laney Walker is young, naïve and independent. The three most important things in life are her father, her best friend and boyfriend Evan and baseball. Her mother abandoned her and her father when she was still a toddler and it was just the two of them for several years, they share a unique father/daughter bond. So when Evan tried to pry his way into their world when she was ten years old, she gave him hell. He quickly earned a place at her side and the two have been inseparable since then. They fish, play baseball, share their first kiss and fall in love.
When it comes time to go to college and they are separated for the first time, it puts a strain on their seemingly perfect relationship. Laney may be young and naïve, but she's no fool, so she breaks up with Evan and they go off to their separate colleges as 'just friends'.
College is a new experience for Laney. At first she tries to isolate herself, miserable without her father and Evan. Laney soon finds solace and a new friendship with her perky, petite, red headed roommate Bennett. They live in a co-ed dorm and as much as Bennett pushes to make friends with all the potentially hot guys, Laney pulls back just as hard. Her and Evan might be just friends right now, but she still loves him and tries desperately to remain loyal to him. Enter Dane Kendrick.
Dane and Tate Kendrick along with their friend Sawyer Becket quickly become staples in Laney and Bennett's lives. And as Laney grows more comfortable with herself and the world at large she becomes more undeniably attracted to Dane. All she's ever known is Evan, but she can't fight the feelings she has for Dane.
Hall has added a little spice to the all but worn out love triangle aspect we see all to often in novels. Laney loves both Evan and Dane two completely different men, for completely different reasons. What took this book from a good book to a great book were the underlying issues that Laney had to deal with in addition to being torn between two men. A stunning betrayal of trust from someone quite close to her and a possible stalker. Hall wove all these aspects throughout the story flawlessly by creating characters that were flawed but still had a depth to them. I'm usually swayed to one side of the triangle by the end of a book, but I cannot decide if I'm team Dane, or team Evan with this one, although I'm seriously leaning toward Dane.
