The Goddess War begins in Antigoddess, the first installment of the new series by acclaimed author of Anna Dressed in Blood, Kendare Blake.
Old Gods never die…
Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.
Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.
These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.
Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.
Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.
The Goddess War is about to begin.

The gods are at war and they are dying. Choose your side.
Athena and Hermes are withering away, plagued by strange sickness, so they are travelling the world looking for answers. Apollo was reincarnated as a teenager, Aiden, and has once again found the reincarnation of Cassandra. Trouble is Cassandra has no memories of her past lives as Aiden does. The story goes back and forth between these two sets of characters POV, which at times is confusing.
While Athena and Hermes search for clues as to why they are dying, Aiden and Cassandra are in high school and attending bon fires. Blake gave all the characters a modern day make over as well. Athena has tattoos and purple streaks in her hair, Hermes loves Hollister and Apollo don's a hoodie. Oddly, I actually liked the modernization of the characters. Blake did her research on greek mythology as well, especially the Trojan war. This much is evident as Cassandra and Aiden/Apollo's story unfolds. Blake holds true to Cassandra's strength and Apollo's innate ability to be a jackass!
All of the gods are suffering, dying, and now they battle each other. Aphrodite, Poseidon and Hera have chosen the darker path. It's as if they've gone mad and they are plotting to kill the other gods. Athena and Hermes slowly gather allies to fight with them, against their former kin but they are weak from the ailments that haunt them. The war has begun, the only question now is, who will win in the end.
I had very high hopes for this book. The synopsis coupled with Blake's previous works that I've read quickly added this book to my TBR list. The story was confusing and chaotic at times which made it harder to stay interested in. What kept my attention were the little details taken straight from greek mythology, and then given that modern twist unique to the author. I absolutely loved the interactions between Athena and Hermes, but when it came to Aiden/Apollo and Cassandra I was usually underwhelmed. It was almost like Blake was taking us to the dark and twisted place promised on the cover with the gods, but then she fell back to her YA roots with the teenagers.
Overall I'm still intrigued with the concept of the gods choosing sides and going to war. With specific gods championing for good to prevail. The attention to detail on the mythology allowed for me to overlook some of what was lacking. All that being said, I will read the next book in this series to see if Blake can find a better balance between the stories/characters. And I simply must know where she goes with the war, and where some loyalties that were unclear lie.

Kendare Blake is an import from South Korea who was raised in the United States by caucasian parents. You know, that old chestnut. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Ithaca College and a Master’s degree in Writing from Middlesex University in London. She brakes for animals, the largest of which was a deer, which sadly didn’t make it, and the smallest of which was a mouse, which did, but it took forever. Amongst her likes are Greek Mythology, rare red meat and veganism. She also enjoys girls who can think with the boys like Ayn Rand, and boys who scare the morality into people, like Bret Easton Ellis.
