Before the curse, there was a promise.
A prequel to the bestselling Tiger’s Curse series, this much anticipated novella recalls the beginning of Ren and Kishan’s story. Before Kelsey there was a girl, raised by a villain, whose love for a hero changed the course of history.Trapped under the thumb of her abusive and powerful father Lokesh, Yesubai struggles to keep her own magical abilities secret while evading his dark powers. When Lokesh promises Yesubai to the prince of a neighboring kingdom, she becomes the central pawn in his plot to destroy the ruling family and take power for himself. Yesubai is trapped by her father’s threats and desperate to protect the man she comes to love, but she knows that any decision she makes will have dire consequences. As dark forces gather around her, Yesubai must decide if she’s willing to reveal that somewhere deep within her she has the power to change everything.

As a huge fan of this series, I was quite excited to learn Houck was going to go back and give us some insight into Yesubai and the events leading up to her death and the curse her father put on Ren and Kishan. You see, Kelsey wasn't the first beautiful, strong woman to put the young princes at odds against each other.
Once upon a time there was a little girl that was kept locked away. Her mother was dead, killed by her psychotic father because she bore a daughter instead of a son. And her father was mentally, physically and emotionally abusive. That little girl grew into a beautiful and powerful woman who hid her gifts from everyone, especially her father.
We already knew that Lokesh was a power hungry mad man, the epitome of evil, sacrificing his own daughter in his thirst for power and domination. Tiger's Promise is the story of Yesubai's disturbing childhood and the bargain she was forced in to, a marriage to Prince Dirhen. While Ren is handsome and kind, Yesubai's heart is captured by the darker of the brothers, Kishan. And Lokesh, the master manipulator, weaves a dangerous web of lies and deceit pitting brother against brother promising Yesubai as the prize.
What a wonderful story that gave readers more insight into cherished secondary characters from the Tiger series. While Yesubai takes center stage, we also got to know Ren and Kishan's mother on a more personal level. The scenery that is wrapped around this story was absolutely breathtaking as well, I could seriously envision each tree and flower in my mind. Houck is a masterful storyteller, and I cannot wait to see what she has in store for her fans next.
