So, here at TTC Books and more, we don't just cover books. We cover anything book related. When Ryan Brody from Modernize reached out to me about a guest post on the blog, I wasn't sure why at first. I mean, what could home improvement and a book blog have in common. Well just wait, he is fixing to tell us exactly what they have in common and I love every single thing! I suddenly want to re-decorate my house with what you are fixing to read as the blue print!

Ways to Decorate Your Reading Room
From fantasy to sci-fi,
mystery, thriller, and literary, your love for stories shines through every
book on your shelf. Here at Modernize, we’re passionate about
reading, too, and we love to pull inspiration from our favorite novels for a
uniquely customizable approach to our home decor. Here’s some of our best tips
to turn your reading space into a literary wonderland..
Think
Outside the Bookshelf
Can’t get enough books?
It’s important to house your library on the shelves it deserves. Organize and
accessorize, but don’t just rely on bookshelves to hold your faves. You can
actually use books in many other ways to decorate your reading room.
Browse through antique,
resale, and thrift stores for old hardback volumes. Group two or three
decorative books together and coordinate colors with your decor. Wrap ribbon or
lace around the books to create a centerpiece. You can top it with a synthetic flower
or place a candle nearby. This DIY tip is great for coffee and end tables, as
well as bookshelves. If you can’t find hardback volumes that fit your
aesthetic, you can also recover books with scrapbook or map paper.
Letters
You’ll Love
Words hold symbolism, and if you’re like us, you have a
list of favorites. Words like read, relax, love, or dream can inspire. Using
your favorite words and quotes to decorate your reading space will bring
stories—and a particular mood—to life.
There are quite a few options
for this technique. Browse through craft stores for wooden letters and spray
paint with your favorite color to match your decor perfectly. You can also wrap
letters in yarn and glue in place. If you’re not especially crafty, browse
artisan markets and websites like Etsy for unique, handmade treasures.
You can also incorporate
words through textiles. We absolutely love pillows, blankets, and tablecloths
decorated with beloved quotes and messages. When you grab your Pride and Prejudice or Shakespeare quote
blanket, you’ll feel like you’re wrapping yourself up in a story—literally!
The Writing on the Wall
Don’t stop
at your textiles and bookshelves; embrace your wall art, too! You have so many
options here, from expanding the idea of incorporating favorite words and
quotes to browsing for illustrations from your favorite childhood books. Fan
artists create their own masterpieces and may provide a unique insight into
your favorite characters. You can find brilliant art on DeviantArt, Etsy, and
Pinterest.
If you find
yourself with multiple copies of your favorite hardback book, you can remove
the dust jacket on one and frame it. Add metallic paint, ribbon, buttons, or
anything you’d like to complement the book cover’s design.
A Sofa to Sink Into
No matter
whether you prefer to read sitting up, lying on your side, holding your book
over your head, or lying on your belly, you’ll need a sofa or chair you can
sink into. Let’s face it; you’re going to be reading for hours! You’ll need
cozy furniture to stay comfortable and inspired.
If you have
a lot of brightly colored books and accents in your reading room, choosing a
neutral fabric for your sofa will keep attention on your unique literary
accessories. If your design is the opposite, go for a bold fabric color and
break it up with neutral (and literary) throw pillows.
No matter
where you decide to start, designing the perfect reading oasis is every
literature-lover’s dream. Have fun, and pull inspiration from the books that
developed your passion for stories!
