Sixteen-year-old Tatum Elsea is bracing for the worst summer of her life. After being falsely accused of a crime, she’s stuck under stepmother-imposed house arrest and her BFF’s gone ghost. Tatum fills her newfound free time with community service by day and working at her covert graphic design business at night (which includes trading emails with a cute cello-playing client). When Tatum discovers she’s not the only one in the house keeping secrets, she finds she has the chance to make amends with her family and friends. Equipped with a new perspective, and assisted by her feisty step-abuela-slash-fairy- godmother, Tatum is ready to start fresh and maybe even get her happy ending along the way.

Guest Post with Author Christina June:
What
fiction most influenced your childhood, and what effect did those stories have
on IT STARTED WITH GOODBYE
I read constantly
when I was younger. My parents were
forever taking me to the library and bookstore because I just couldn’t get
enough. I grew up on the Berenstain
Bears, Shel Silverstein and fairy tale and short story anthologies. I loved The Babysitters’ Club and the All of
a Kind Family. I loved Anne of Green
Gables and Emily of New Moon (I’m more of an Emily than an Anne). I devoured all things Beverly Cleary and Judy
Blume. Now that I’m a parent, these are
the books I find myself eager to share with my own daughter.
I see the
influences of this literature all the time in my own writing. They taught me to be careful with friendships
and family dynamics. Even in a story
where there is romance, the author should always honor the other important relationships
in a narrator’s world. They also showed
me how a good story teller can make you relate to the narrator and feel like
it’s not just you experiencing something.
Judy Blume’s ARE YOU THERE GOD? ITS ME, MARGARET was a thousand percent
that book for me. I always tell myself
that if only one reader can relate to a character I’ve created, then I’ve done
my job.
As a teen, I read a
ton of horror—Christopher Pike, VC Andrews and RL Stine. This is what all my friends were reading
too. I may or may not have been a member
of online fan clubs for these authors in the early days of the internet. I wouldn’t say these affected me much in
terms of writing, but they still affect me when I’m choosing books to read or
movies to watch. I still enjoy dark
humor, tension, danger and creep. I like
to escape into worlds and situations that aren’t necessarily fantasy but
probably won’t happen in my daily life, so horror/thriller/mystery often fits
the bill.

Her debut novel, IT STARTED WITH GOODBYE, will be published by Blink/HarperCollins on May 9, 2017.
