Casey North lost everything when his restaurant burned to
the ground: his hopes, his dreams, his reason for living. With nothing tying
him to LA, he packs up and moves back to his hometown of Land’s End. He takes
up residence in a beach house and attempts to shake the depression he’s fallen
into after his life collapsed. There’s just one tiny problem: the ghost
haunting his kitchen.
Myles Taylor wasn’t always trapped in the Between. One
minute, he was about to propose to his boyfriend of five years as they sat out
on their surfboards, and the next, he woke up on the beach to find his
long-dead uncle walking toward him. After his shock fades, he must learn to
navigate his new reality as he searches for a way to move into the Great
Beyond. But first he must deal with the man who’s invaded his territory.
With Myles tied to the beach house and Casey unwilling to
leave it, the two must learn to cohabitate as the lines separating them begin
to blur. They grow closer than either expected, but what will become of them
once Myles finally escapes the Between?

Excerpt from Past the Breakers...
Hey everyone! I’m approaching the end of my Past the Breakers tour, so I thought I’d wind down by sharing an excerpt from my latest WIP. It’s set in an aquarium, which means lots of fun aquatic animal shenanigans, and it may or may not star a mischievous octopus and his best friend, Cory. I’m having so much fun with it, and hopefully after this sneak peak, you’ll understand why. Enjoy!
Enjoy!
Cory felt a tentacle snaking its way around his ankle. Suckers
latched onto his calf as another dexterous appendage secured itself around his
foot, the tip worming its way into his flipper. All of a sudden, he began to
thrash, his arms splashing the surface of the water as he playfully yelped,
“It’s got me! Oh my God! He’s got me!”
Only two minutes into his educational presentation half submerged
in a salty tank at the Oceanview Aquarium and a few of the children on a
behind-the-scenes tour started to scream. A new record. The youngest—a small
blond boy about six—almost descended into tears. Cory knew he shouldn’t get
such a kick out of scaring grade-school children to death, but he couldn’t help
himself sometimes. Especially since one of the kids had heckled him before he
even started.
“Aww, don’t worry, Noah,” Cory said, attempting to reassure the
small blond. He stilled his movements and lifted his leg out of the water to
show off the giant Pacific octopus dangling from his ankle. “It’s just my
little buddy, Levi. Everybody say hi to Levi.”
As he detangled the reddish brown octopus from his ankle, he went
into his usual spiel about the importance of octopuses in the food chain while
also reiterating how smart and wonderful they were. He gave the same speech
several times a week as he wrangled Levi’s many limbs, so he had it down pat,
but the way the kids hung onto every word he said always put a smile on his
face.
And after giving them such a fright, he knew he had to make sure
they left with a sense of wonder not fear when it came to the resident sea
creatures entrusted to his care. But he liked the challenge.
“As you can see, Levi’s really friendly and loves people. I found
him a few months ago when I helped some friends release a sea turtle we rehabbed
here. Levi washed up on the beach missing three of his eight arms. I put him in
a cooler, brought him to the aquarium, and fed him all the shrimp he could eat,
so now he’s in love with me.” Cory smirked at Pamela, his coworker leading the
tour. She rolled her eyes like she had the previous hundred times he’d retold
the story.
“He only as five arms?” one of the children asked.
Cory smiled at the girl and shook his head. “See that’s the
interesting part. He grew all three of them back, so he is once again, an
eight-armed octopus.”
The kids’ faces lit up with wonder. “Whoa!”
“Pretty cool, huh?”
“I want an octopus,” one of children said.
“Me too!” shouted another.
“Okay, kids, it’s time to move onto the penguins,” Pamela said.
“Aww, but I wanted to pet the octopuses,” little Noah pouted.
Cory smiled and waved good-bye to the children as they exited,
ignoring the creep of tentacles up his neck. “Okay, big guy, you’ve had your
fun, but I have to get out now.” Extracting himself from the muscular octopus
took some work, but he eventually freed himself from Levi’s clutches and
climbed out of the tank. “I’ll bring you some shrimp after lunch,” he promised.
His stomach rumbled at the thought of food reminding him he’d skipped breakfast
that morning, but he still had work to do before he could take his lunch break.
