- It is the twilight of mankind. Depleted by generations of war with a race of dark beasts, humanity stands on the brink of extinction. The outlands are soaked with the blood of the fallen. The midlands are rotting with decadence and despair.
Elfkind, estranged by past crimes, watches and waits for nature to run its course.
And then the two collide.
Ayden's life has long been guided by two emotions: love for his sister, and hatred of all things human. When he's captured in battle, he is enslaved in the service of a human prince, Freyrik Farr. Freyrik's always known elves to be beautiful and dangerous, but never has one affected him as deeply as Ayden. Teetering on a dagger's edge between duty and high treason, Freyrik discovers that some choices can change a life, and some an entire world.
Between prejudice, politics, pride, and survival, Ayden and Freyrik must carve a new path, no matter how daunting. For nothing less than the fate of both their peoples rests on the power of their perseverance - and their love.

I don't read a lot of high fantasy but on occasion one catches my attention. I do like an occasional story of elves. I was glad to get a chance to listen to this.
Ayden is an elf and he and his sister get captured by humans. He finds himself a slave to the prince to save his sister.
Freyrick is enamored with the elf that was captured on their land. He takes the elf as a slave and finds that Ayden is not an enemy.
This is an exciting well-written fantasy with Elves, humans, kings, princes, slaves. There is a lot going on. I liked the slow burn of the relationship between Freyrick and Ayden. I like the dynamics of the story. I will warn you there is violence.
Craig Beck always is a great narration of a story. I loved the way he gave each character a distinctive voice. He also makes the story exciting and I didn't want to stop listening. It's a long story so hard to listen in one day but I made it in two. You may want to have book two handy since this ends in a cliffhanger and you will want to dive right into the next!
Rachel is an M/M erotic romance author and a freelance writer and editor. She's also a sadist with a pesky conscience, shamelessly silly, and quite proudly pervish. Fortunately, all those things make writing a lot more fun for her . . . if not so much for her characters.
When she's not writing about hot guys getting it on (or just plain getting it; her characters rarely escape a story unscathed), she loves to read, hike, camp, sing, perform in community theater, and glue captions to cats. She also has a particular fondness for her very needy dog, her even needier cat, and shouting at kids to get off her lawn.
She's a twitter addict (@rachelhaimowitz), and she blogs every M/W/F at Fantasy Unbound (Rachel-Haimowitz.blogspot.com). She also keeps a website, of course, with all her current and upcoming projects (RachelHaimowitz.com). She loves to hear from folks, so feel free to drop her a line anytime at metarachel@gmail.com

Thanks for the good review, Cat. I had read this a while back, one of my earlier gay fantasies, and I really liked it. - Purple Reader,
