Where are you from, and where do you call home?
I’m from rural Central Ohio. I grew up in the country outside a very small town—Prospect, Ohio. I’m a born and bred country girl. City life isn’t for me. I love being surrounded by fields and nature and not having a neighbor who can see me every time I go outside.
I now live maybe ten miles from where I grew up, just outside of Marion, Ohio.
My town is the home of President Harding
What inspired you to start writing?
Learning to read. From the moment I learned to read, I wanted to be a writer.
How long have you been writing?
I started writing seriously in 2010.
What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?
Take the time to learn your craft. Read books on how to write, go to workshops, and find a writers group. When you’re just starting out, you don’t know what you don’t know.
I didn’t know this until I started writing, but there are rules to writing that readers don’t know about. A writer who hasn’t learned those rules can be spotted a mile away. You have to know what ‘show don’t tell’ means, you have to learn how to use deep point of view, and you can’t head hop. Those are just few.
But the great news is that everything can be learned!
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
The only time I get writer’s block is if I’m stressed. Being stressed is death to my creativity and desire to write. Some writers thrive on the stress. Not me. I need peace. I need calm. Going on a long walk and making sure I exercise are the two things that help me the most.
What Authors in the genre do you read?
This is going to sound weird, but my books don’t neatly fit a genre. So it’s hard to find ones like mine to read. My books straddle the lines between romantic suspense, paranormal romance, and romantic thriller. Some readers have even called them romantic horror.
What comes first, the plot or characters?
Characters. I’m a pantser. That means I don’t plot a book. I write it by the seat of my pants. I usually start the book with a vague idea of who the character is and just see what happens. The first fifty pages are the hardest because I’m figuring out who the characters are.
Part of my joy in writing is that moment when something so unexpected happens that I have to stop writing for a moment and go... Damn! I can’t believe that just happened.
Are you working on anything at the present you would like to tell us about?
I’m working on a dark romantic thriller series. It’s three books all based on the same characters. I’ve almost got two books completed in the series. And won’t publish them until all three are completed. I don’t write well under stress. And deadlines make me stressed!
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
There are how many books I’ve written and how many I’ve published.
I’ve written eight books, but only published five of them. Three of them were early versions of Dangerous Dreams and Broken Dreams, but they weren’t good enough to be published. I was still learning.
My favorite is Broken Dreams. Probably because I spent more time on that book than any other book. It took me two and half years to get Lathan’s story right. I just love him. He rides a motorcycle, he’s tattooed, he’s hearing impaired, and utterly perfect!
Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?
The comments I get from readers make me smile. Here’s a sample...
Wow... Just wow.
Holy shit. What did I just read?
I’ve never read a book like this before.
