Hi Y’all! Come in and grab a seat while I tell you about this book I just read.
The title is Defying Evil by Abbie Roads it is book 1 in The Blood is Thicker Than series.
The cover is very unique. Then I read the blurb and it really got my interest, because Son of a serial killer and love interest is his father’s only surviving victim?? That got my attention!
The story is a psychological thriller with romantic elements.
Who’s my favorite main character? Can’t choose. I loved both Cain and Mercy. Mercy is so strong considering what she’s been through. And Cain has been through as much but he’s having to fight the evil inside himself.
Was there another character I loved and why? I liked Mac too. He was great to take in a boy like Cain.
The story is one big twist. It grabs you from the beginning and keeps you turning the page. Very shocking.
I loved the ending. I sure didn’t see it coming. It was an HEA and gave us a hint of a next story.
If you like psychological thrillers, serial killers, romance and lots of twists you will love this.
I’ll leave a little trigger warning as well, there are hints of attempted rape, lots of violence, blood play and off page knife play on a minor. Oh, and off page abuse. If these things bother you skip this or read with caution.
Where are you from, and where do you call home?
I’m from Marion, Ohio. It’s about an hour north of Columbus. I always say that because people have at least heard of Columbus even though they haven’t heard of Marion.
Our claim to fame: Being the home of President Warren G. Harding.
What inspired you to start writing?
Being a reader!
When I first started reading, I would complain to my teacher that books didn’t end the way I thought they should end. She suggested I become a writer. So here I am writing books and characters that I want to read!
How long have you been writing? I’ve been seriously writing since 2010.
What advice would you give a new writer just starting out? Slow down and take the time to learn the craft of writing. When I first started writing, I didn’t know how much I didn’t know about how write a good book. I didn’t want to just write a book, I wanted to write a good book. I had to learn everything from the ground up. I had to learn about deep pov, show don’t tell, characters, plot, echoes, passive voice, fresh writing, deep editing. And a million other things authors need to know. Even now, I certainly don’t claim to know everything. But at least I I love learning and growing my craft.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?
Lol… The only time I’ve ever had writer’s block was when I was stressed, burned out, and on deadline. Some writers thrive under stress. Not me. My creative well dries up. I can ‘force’ myself to write (which I’ve done), but it’s not pleasant. Every word is hard, every paragraph painful. I really try to eliminate as much stress as possible from my life so that my creative well keeps replenished and the words flow easy.
What Author’s in the genre do you read?
This is a hard question. My books straddle genres. Different readers call them different things. Sometimes they are called romantic suspense, sometimes paranormal romance (though not in any traditional kind of way), sometimes dark romantic thrillers, and sometimes horror romance.
The authors that I read are all over the place: Lisa Regan, Kristen Ashley, J.R. Ward, Tahereh Mafi, Lori Foster, Sarah J. Maas, Ruby Dixon, Tillie Cole, Stephen King, Freida McFadden.
What comes first, the plot or characters?
Characters. I usually get a character in my head then follow them wherever they lead me. The always surprise me.
Are you working on anything at the present you would like to tell us about?
I’m working on a thriller with romantic elements. I have books 1 and 2 done but need to get started on book 3. I won’t publish any of them until all of them are done. It’s about a female podcaster who is researching a cold case about a paperboy who went missing in the 90s. But powerful men will do anything to keep her from telling the story.
Describe the perfect writing space.
Warm. Cozy. Quiet. No interruptions. I’m not an author who likes to write in public. I like being in my own spaces. I have a few favorite writing spaces. I write in my office at the day job if I have a cancellation. I have an office at home and moved my desk into a nook under one of the eaves. Or I like writing at the table in front of a fire.
Do you do research for your books? If so, what does that entail?
I mostly make things up. But I will sometimes do research to make sure what I’m making up isn’t actually real.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’ve written 8 books. But only published 5 of them. The 3 that will never see the light of day were learning books—learning to write novels. All 3 are versions of the Dangerous Dreams and Broken Dreams. I just wasn’t a skilled enough writer to tell those stories yet.
Do you hear from your readers much? What do they say?
I do hear from readers. One of the comments I get all the time is “I’ve never read anything like this.” I get a lot of “Wows.” And “Holy sh!t.” I love surprising my readers and I especially love seeing my books through a reader’s eyes.
