Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!
Cat and I decided to do just one book/audiobook that we enjoyed in 2016 instead of a top 10 or anything along those lines. When it came down to it, we both said THIRDS. Cat has listened to all the Audio's pretty much in the past month, said she couldn't make herself stop and set the iPod down, because the stories were so juicy and enthralling. Myself, I've read all the books in the series at least twice, but my personal favorite that has received much more of my time than any others in the series is book 6, Against the Grain.
So, we decided to make the THIRDS series our top series for 2016. Just in time for the long awaited release of book 8, Thick & Thin, on February 1st. For the month of January we'll be sharing our reviews for the audios and e-books in this series as well as some fun sneak peaks at book 8, ending with the release review of Thick & Thin on release day. So stay tuned and check back daily for updates and more!
Hell & High Water
THIRDS book 1
When homicide detective Dexter J. Daley’s testimony helps send his partner away for murder, the consequences—and the media frenzy—aren’t far behind. He soon finds himself sans boyfriend, sans friends, and, after an unpleasant encounter in a parking garage after the trial, he’s lucky he doesn’t find himself sans teeth. Dex fears he’ll get transferred from the Human Police Force’s Sixth Precinct, or worse, get dismissed. Instead, his adoptive father—a sergeant at the Therian-Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron otherwise known as the THIRDS—pulls a few strings, and Dex gets recruited as a Defense Agent.
Dex is determined to get his life back on track and eager to get started in his new job. But his first meeting with Team Leader Sloane Brodie, who also happens to be his new jaguar Therian partner, turns disastrous. When the team is called to investigate the murders of three HumaniTherian activists, it soon becomes clear to Dex that getting his partner and the rest of the tightknit team to accept him will be a lot harder than catching the killer—and every bit as dangerous.

Cat's Audiobook Review...
"Explosive beginning for a series"
What did you love best about Hell & High Water?
I loved the characters. I love Dex and the humor he brings to the story and Sloan with his serious, demeanor. They are a perfect match I love opposites attract.
Which character – as performed by Mark Westfield – was your favorite?
Sloan.I loved the way Mark Westfield brought hi to life.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. I laughed at times and wanted to cry. My heart went out to Sloan and I gasped in shock at the end.
Any additional comments?
The Thirds are an intriguing new concept on shifters. I loved each character and can't wait to see their stories.
The plot was also interesting starting as a mystery trying to find out who is killing Therians and a Thirds officer, that Dex replaces on the Thirds team. The plot turns to suspense with some twists.
Dex lends some humor to the seriousness of the team, and the ending was quite the shock.
I loved Mark Westfield's voice as the Mystery man at the very end of the TV Broadcast that leads into the next book. I just had to grab the next story to see what's going on.
If you like action with a touch of humor, suspense, unique shifters, and a touch of romance, you will love this.
I highly recommend this series!

When your partner on the HPF (Human Police Force) was raised by a Therian and his brother is also Therian, it probably is not in your best interest to kill an unarmed Therian teenager and then try to get your partner to lie for you. Thus starts the downward spiral that is Dexter Daley's, Dex, life. First he testifies against his partner at trial, then his fellow "officers" beat the crap out of him for his honesty, on more than one occasion. His boyfriend leaves him and he looses his job on the HPF. The Silver lining? Dex is transferred to THIRDS, the therian/human police force where his father and brother work. The downside? His new sex on a stick therian partner, who is also his team leader and a jaguar shifter, Sloane.
Sloane Brodie has zero tolerance for stupidity and his fuse is very short. Still reeling from the death of his former partner, a human and the brother of an HPF officer, Gabe. Sloane knows he needs to keep his head in the game, but he is intrigued by his new partner from the start. While the blonde haired blue eyed detective infuriates him most of the time, there is also a mutual attraction there that Dex refuses to ignore. Neither of them act on it straight away. No, it's more fun for Dex to drive Sloan bat shit crazy with subtle gestures, innuendos and a very dry sense of humor. But when Sloane overhears Dex when he's sleeping, dreaming, moaning and talking... all bets are off.
I'll give it to them, they really do make an honest effort to avoid the sexual tension that is so thick between them, it would take a chainsaw to cut it. But the two are forced into close quarters after Dex gets beat up, yes again, and the relationship seems to be progressing of it's own accord. Whether Dex and Sloane want it to or not. But there is still a killer out there, supposedly a Therian, that is running around tearing out peoples throats. And soon the team will come to realize the threat is way closer to home than any of them could have ever imagined. When Sloane's life is threatened, how far will Dex go to save his partner?
I loved the way Cochet played the characters off of each other, both their strengths and weakness's. Not all of the team member's accept Dex taking the place of their fallen brother. He has to earn their trust and friendship. Of course you would think he has an in with his father Tony and his brother Cael being Therian and a solid part of the team, but it doesn't quite work that way. This isn't an insta love story either, even at the very end of this installment, Sloane and Dex are in agreement, but there haven't been any terms of endearment. I think that as well only adds to the intrigue with these characters. You will want to come back for more, to see where not only Sloan and Dex go... but their friends, family and team members as well. And the world Cochet has built is intricate, detailed and believable. The way she went back and gave a plausible explanation of the creation of the Therian, and how they have acclimated into society. Oh but wait, not everyone is happy about the shifters trying to blend into society. So there is discord, just another piece of the puzzle that makes up this world Cochet has created for THIRDS.
This is a must read for fans of alpha male romance, dry and whitty comic relief, mystery, suspense and comradery with some juicy sexual tension and a few sloppy kisses that lead to just a little bit of unbridled passion. I cannot wait for the next book in this series, I have some thoughts about different things that happened in this book, and I can't wait to see how certain storylines and threats play out. Grab your copy now and get ready for book 2, Blood and Thunder.
