Praise for THE QUEEN'S RISING
“Sophisticated plotting is the hallmark of this debut, which deftly navigates complex, treasonous plots and political intrigue. [A] Stunning literary adventure.” —Booklist (starred review)
“A sprawling girl-powered fantasy. A compelling page-turner. Hand this magical debut to readers who loved Shannon Hale’s Princess Academy or Sarah J. Maas’s “Throne of Glass” series.” —School Library Journal
When her seventeenth summer solstice arrives, Brienna desires only two things: to master her passion and to be chosen by a patron.
Growing up in the southern Kingdom of Valenia at the renowned Magnalia House should have prepared her for such a life. While some are born with an innate talent for one of the five passions—art, music, dramatics, wit, and knowledge—Brienna struggled to find hers until she belatedly chose to study knowledge. However, despite all her preparations, Brienna’s greatest fear comes true—the solstice does not go according to plan and she is left without a patron.

Months later, her life takes an unexpected turn when a disgraced lord offers her patronage. Suspicious of his intent, and with no other choices, she accepts. But there is much more to his story, and Brienna soon discovers that he has sought her out for his own vengeful gain. For there is a dangerous plot being planned to overthrow the king of Maevana—the archrival kingdom of Valenia—and restore the rightful queen, and her magic, to the northern throne. And others are involved—some closer to Brienna than she realizes.
With war brewing between the two lands, Brienna must choose whose side she will remain loyal to—passion or blood. Because a queen is destined to rise and lead the battle to reclaim the crown. The ultimate decision Brienna must determine is: Who will be that queen?

What Queen in
history fascinates or intrigues you most?
There are so
many queens that fascinate me, but one in particular caught my eye when I was
doing some research for The Queen’s
Rising. I was actually reading about woad, which was the blue paint that
the Celts would put on their skin before battle, and I stumbled upon the story
of Boudica, who was Queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe. There is not much
known about her, but one of her greatest acts was leading a bloody uprising
against occupying Roman forces in AD 60-61, shortly before her death. Her
husband was an independent ally of Rome, but when he died, the Romans annexed
his kingdom and took his land. It is said that the Romans did terrible things
to Boudica and her daughters, and so Boudica rallied her Iceni warriors and led
a revolt, refusing to let the Romans take her land and mistreat her daughters
and people. She and her warriors defeated the Roman Ninth Legion and destroyed
the capital of Roman Britain, which is such an incredible feat considering how
powerful Rome was at the time.
Boudica’s story
inspired quite a bit of Maevana’s creation, the northern realm in my book, The Queen’s
Rising. I wanted to honor her bravery, her fierceness and her leadership,
but also her power and prestige as a queen. There’s one depiction of Boudica in
particular that really brought it all together for me. Shortly after reading
about the woad, and then Boudica, I came across a beautiful painting of Boudica
sitting on a horse, dressed for war in armor and blue woad, wielding a spear,
about to ride into battle. And I was like, Yes.
This is what the Maevan queens are like. Beautiful. Fierce. Courageous.
Ready to rise, just like Boudica.
