It shall be punished as treason.
And the war to free the Punimin people from the Strelkie tyrants begins.
As a young wilderness girl, Pistol Rose knows nothing of the advanced Strelkie City or the mad king Ward Harrol who sits behind its walls. She doesn't understand why the Strelkie forbid marriage.
When the king forces the surrounding countryside to change their traditional culture to match his vision, the Punimin resist, and Rose learns everything about how to kill Strelkie and get away with it.
But throwing her own secret wedding without being caught... is another matter entirely. Rose refuses to give up her lover, Clock Dancin, for the tyrants who threaten her way of life. And most Punimin stand with her–only one is a betrayer.
In this futuristic medieval steampunk country filled with liars, killers, and wilderuckers, the strongest weapon is love. But using it comes with a heavy cost.

Pistol Rose and the Wedding that Sparked a War by Michael Ryan Hahn Guest Review by Betty B.
“And this is precisely how King Ward Harrol wants the Fifth Age to be. This how he needs it to be: with all his people distracted by the perfect balance of discomfort and hope. His great city of Strelkie, surrounded by a greater vastness of his wild Punimin, is a delicate country to keep at peace.”
An electrifying first novel from an author that I would already consider a master of fantasy/steampunk. 'Pistol Rose and the Wedding that Sparked a War' by Michael Ryan Hahn is any readers dream of a novel.
The conflict in this story takes place in between two civilizations: the Strelkie, who are wealthy, happy and pampered by their king in their shining city, and the Punimin, who live in the wilds, farm their own food and struggle to live even meager lives.
The Punimin have hated the Strelkie for so long that it is just a way of life for them now. Just like their wood carving, which they do on every single available surface in order to preserve their family stories for future generations.
At the beginning of this story, Pistol Rose is a 10 year-old girl, surrounded by a large, loving family who are all gun makers by trade. Growing up in the rough wilds, Rose has the attention and adoration of her friend, Clock Dancin' a boy who comes from a family of clock makers.
Eventually, Rose and Dancin' realize that they are in love and wish to marry. But in order to do so, they must first apply to the Strelkie for permission. The Strelkie live to be cruel to the Punimin, and Rose and Dancin' are turned down quickly. It's not the first time that a young Punimin couple have been turned down when applying for permission to marry, but it just may be the last, as this decision sparks a revolution that is sure to have lasting consequences.
This was a real page-turner for me. I loved Hahn's plotting skills and I couldn't put the book down, it seemed to move so quickly. I also loved his character development and world building. 5 stars!
Michael won a ScreenCraft competition that led to development with Bad Robot. He's a 3x ScreenCraft Finalist, and has 18 other accolades from major screenwriting competitions, including AFF and Final Big Break. As a director, he won Best Feature at GenCon and Best Director at BAFF for his micro-budget, wild sci-fi comedy action feature, ALIEN THEORY, which was shot with a diverse ensemble cast in 40 locations across 3 states on a budget of just $25K. Known as a fast problem-solver, his stories weave exciting action with humor and heart, in any genre, with complicated villains -- probably because of his upbringing. He comes from a large raucous family, and he survived a shockingly bruising (but not altogether unfun) cadre of violently delinquent Boy Scouts to become an Eagle Scout. He's great at fight scenes. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Elisabeth Meurer. They will co-direct an original sci-fi thriller in '24. In his spare time, Michael designs custom habitats for cats.*
